Got those "First day of summer" blues. Er, well, I guess that was yesterday. So second day of summer blues.

The Earth's wobble starts to track in the other direction days start to get shorter and suddenly everyone is leaning slightly to the left and not happy about it.

That way where you are too? Geeze. Everyone around here.

I'm 90% sure it isn't my fault.

My back hurts, and it's hot and humid out. It's at least four months til some decent weather. My mood will improve then.

I'm in a bad mood because I sold something on ebay and USPS took a full, 42" box from me and delivered an empty 11" portion of the box to the buyer. So now I have to waste time and effort getting it sorted out.

Not a clue. It was a long 42"x6"x6" box with some golf club shafts in it. It must have either gotten wet or caught in a machine and literally torn into two pieces. One portion of the box minus the contents got delivered, the other part just vanished somewhere. The local post office stamped the empty box "received without contents" before delivery, so it probably happened along the second to last leg of the journey. It passed through Connecticut, to New Jersey to Shreveport LA on the way to Texas. No note of damage in Shreveport, so whatever happened took place between them getting it out the door and Texas getting it in.

I ordered some ~70lb+ backup E-PSUs for the lab several years ago, and one of the two boxes showed up all fractured and reassembled with shipping tape. We opened the box, and it was pretty obvious that some UPS jerk had lifted it on the sides and the PSU fell through the bottom and smashed on the floor. the case was all dented and the bezel was now permanently detached on the case. But that isn't the best part.

In order to fix this, they basically laid the torn box out as if it was a tortilla, placed the giant PSU on one side, then the fractured styrofoam insulation bits on the other side, then wrapped it all up with the box and taped it together, like a giant burrito. It was hilarious, and I took pictures.

That is absurd. At least (?) they stamped it. For whatever that is worth. I guess you get to claim insurance on it but sure makes you hope the recipient actually purchased insurance above the free coverage.

I already filed a claim and got denied. They didn't even give a reason, they said they'd mail me a letter explaining why. Appealed and submitted more info and pictures. Apparently they just deny 100% of claims and hope it goes away. Got my mail carrier agreeing that the package was picked up from me in good condition and the receiving post office admits it was broken when it got to them. That proves that I'm not lying and the buyer isn't lying, there's no doubt that the damage happened while they had the package. So it's hard to understand what basis they had for denying the claim, yet they did.

No additional insurance beyond what comes standard with Priority Mail. The item value was below the threshold, so why bother with more coverage?

I've been in some of the USPS distribution centers, I am not surprised.

If loose items are found while sorting the mail, they go into a bin for a day or two before being shipped to Atlanta for auctioning.

That's if no one stole it. A dishonest package handler at a distribution hub looks for packages that:

1. Have been previously damaged before getting to them (or are easily damaged by "accident" at that moment) and are compromised with bulging seams, holes, no tape, etc.

2. Are poorly packed in padded envelopes only and are easy to make a quick covert access slit with a box cutter.

3. Are highly insured - with the value amt. of the shipping readily visible on the label.

Only once have I ever had anything lost in the mail. For that, I blame customs.

I love the super long days at this time of year. It's kinda surreal for there to still be sun out at 10pm and for it to start coming back by like 3:30am. It's such short lived though. It lasts maybe a month then starts to shorten and next thing you know it's dark by 5pm again.

On the flip side, Christmas is coming.

When I was a kid living in Fort MacMurray a few days a year were like that. It would barely get dark for an hour. It's still pretty far from the Arctic Circle. I suspect there it wouldn't get dark at all, possibly the Sun wouldn't even set.
