everyone is a computer aficionado

MrDudeMan

im standing there talking to 3 guys who live on the floor below me in the dorm, and they love to display their knowledge of computers to anyone willing to listen.

i started telling them about how i made a server with quad AMD64s and it has 5.5TB of storage. it has 4gb of PC4000 ram and it can do 100gb/s transfer rate because its .5-.5-1-2. then i was like yeah it also has four 32x dual layer DVD burners because i need to burn a ton of them at once.

obviously that is all a lie. so they start saying "yeah thats cool, my system is pretty close to that."

so i take it a little further...

me: you guys should connect to it for lan HL2 games...it can handle 5 different games at once, each with up to 60 people. they all get less than 2ms ping.
them: thats not that good. ive seen servers that can do much better
me: oh, well its the best i can do with 4gb of RAM.
them: yeah, you should have gotten more and faster RAM

facts about this conversation: i know nothing about HL2 and how many people it can support per game, or even if it works like that. i havent even played it, but im 99.9% sure that is all completely wrong. i know for a fact these guys are tards and they took this load of bullcrap easier than anything ive ever seen.

there was more ownage, and definitely funnier ownage, during the course of the conversation, but it was too long and drawn out.

heh welcome to today's reality. My best story is about the time I argued with a BB employee about graphics card in a notebook and he insisted that a shared video card is better than a dedicated. I forget his reasoning but I could never look him in the eye for the 3 months I worked there.

Every weekday from 11:47-1:17 is ownage for me. There's this one kid who thinks he knows everything about everything and he always tries to show it off. If I ask him if he heard about this or that or if he knows this he always says yes or nods. One time in the entire 4 years that I have known him has he ever admitted to not knowing something.

In reality he knows nothing about computers, and then one day he's like "Yeah me and Ras are gonna build custom computers and sell them online, if you wanna chip in you can do it too." Give me a break. One of the only "technical" terms he knows is front speed bus so he says it a lot.

every single fact you stated in there was completely wrong. way to make a fool of them, too bad they don't know it.

Dude what are you talking about? I have 6 gigs of RAM in my quad AMD64 system and I run 5 60-player servers of CS:S fine. They all get around 20-30 ping.

i knew most of it was utter BS...i happen to be studying to be a CE (not that it makes me super smart, but im not a moron) and thats what i could pull out of my butt on the fly.

i just didnt know about the HL2 stuff...havent had time to play because of class this semester.

LOL, nice RAM timings. 🙂

I like the part about the ping times. Nothing like catching n00bs in a lie.

hahaha the RAM timings almost made me lose it when they said it wasnt that good. i cracked a small smile.

oh... darn, i'm an idiot. what are the timings on the ram?!?! is it the new DDR2?!?! or are you on the cutting edge with DDR3?

A kid at my work is like that, also. He is a sophomore in high school and tells me he runs his own computer business. He says he repairs them and upgrades them, so you figure he'd know his stuff, right? I asked him what video card he had in his own computer and he had no clue. He also told me he used to test parts for Dell and give them his opinion. USED TO. And he's only a sophomore in high school NOW. So was he like 12 years old when he did this?

Plus, he was mentioning the high price of RAM these days and said "Yeah, and if like someone tells me to get them a nice amount of memory, like 32 megs, I'm like 'Sure, but that's gonna cost ya.'"

Hmm, how many years ago was 32 megs a good amount of memory? 😀

^1000

uhh its obviously QDDR4 V2  maybe you should crawl out of your cage. let me guess...you dont know about ATA650 and the P6 11ghz with Uber-Hyperthreading and the 4ghz FSB?

thats almost substandard for HL2 and Doom3 servers.

Just the fact that it was a Best Buy employee negates the fact that you were talking to someone smart.

Seriously. Whenever I walk into a Best Buy and a salesperson walks up to me asking if I need help, I stop and ask them the airspeed velocity of an african swallow. If they reply with the correct response then I start to ask them questions.

9 times out of 10 they give me blank stares.

Wouldn't anyone give you a blank stare if you asked them that question?

HL2 and Doom3?

Come, on. Everyone's playing HL7 and Doom14.

I find the elitism often associated with such worthless knowledge amusing. I don't mean the OP necessarily, but so many like to elevate themselves to some intellectual plateau unreachable by mere BB employees, etc. as though their ability to read Anandtech and browse hardware specs is somehow indicative of intelligence. The problem is that, yes, everyone is an aficionada due to the overwhelming pervasiveness of computing technology; my grandmother knows about as much as the average wannabe-geek.

I see that you have two choices: improve yourself or continue to belittle others. Keep comparing yourselves to Best Buy technicians and you'll find yourself improving very little beyond them.

My tupence 😀

Sounds like every day at work for me. Last server I set up had 8 CPU's and 32 GB of RAM.
