Everyone in the world should unlock and share their wifi

It would:

Help poor people that cannot afford internet.

Torture greedy cable companies. By locking your internet, you are giving them more customers. Unlock it, and they will lose customers. It's that simple.

Cell phone companies could become unnecessary. 90% of the time you would be able to use something like Google Voice. Think how much money you could save if you used wifi for your cell phone service.

Now I'm sure their are some security risks, but if savvy computer people all go this route they can develop security programs to combat the additional risks. There will always be good and evil no matter whether or not your wifi connection is secure.

This would be great except there are hard/soft caps and you will get dropped.

Not to mention having child porn or other illegal activity be traced to you.

Also, troll thread.

what would prevent those "greedy cable companies" from merely charging x amount of cents per Gigabyte or some such scheme?

Frankly, you just sound like another angsty socialist brat, so welcome to ATOT.

Mmkay, say you meet a Russian mystic that is able to mind control the world, and the first thing you do is implement this scheme. Those bastard cable companies start losing subscribers just like you predicted, way to stick it to the man! But to compensate they raise their rates accordingly. So what do you do? You put Yuri on the job again, of course, and mind control the cable companies to lower their rates to where they were! That works for about a year when all the cable companies go bankrupt because they couldn't afford to maintain (let alone expand) their networks. Then, obviously, the defense computers across the world will interpret their loss of communications with their defense centers as destruction of those centers and the nukes will begin to fly. Simply put, your idiotic scheme will undoubtedly cause the destruction of humanity. I hope you're happy. :colbert:

This would be fine except people want their full bandwidth at their fingertips, not shared with a bunch of other people who could cut into their download times, ping times, etc.

I keep mine open as a public service. Houses are far enough apart that nobody will permanently leach bandwidth, but someone wardriving can use the connection.

Artists should make music for free.
Car manufacturers should give everyone free cars.
The Gas companies should give everyone free gas.
Grocery stores should give everyone free food.
Builders should give everyone free houses.
Ducati should keep me in fancy red motorcycles.

And, of course, we should all work for nothing.

That sounds fine if you live in the middle of nowhere.

I can pick up like 30+ networks.

Same here. I don't think opening up my Wifi when I have to pay for the data I use is a good idea.

And the winner of bonehead of the week, OP!

Go ahead and do that. In a couple months you will get dropped your ISP for exceeding your cap or just plain abuse. Then in a couple months both the RIAA and the movie companies will sue you for pirating. But you won't have to worry about paying them because you will be going to prison on child porn charges. Good luck.

My wifi has been unlocked for the past four years.

I pay for my connection so I have enough bandwidth to stream video. If I have somebody else on it my video playback can suffer. Then there's the whole risk that I'll have somebody download things illegally or be involved with things like child porn. The last thing I want is for the police to come knocking on my door for something one of my neighbors did on my connection.

Sorry, but it's staying locked down.
