Everyone compares 3D, but which cards are best for 2D?

I am building a video editing workstation, and until now never had the problem of ignoring 3D performance when choosing a video card.

The card itself only needs to be a superb 2D performer, as not even an OpenGL screensaver will be run on it. Also, only the VGA connection is required, all video in/out will be done with dedicated cards.

Matrox... *shudder* used to have the best 2D durring the reign of the TNT2's, but I have heard very little since the panheir...ia.

Any insight would be appreciated.

New question,
What is the difference between the G400 and the newer cards? I will get dual head just in case a 2nd monitor becomes available, but really do not see any
reason to choose one matrox card over another.
//End question

Excuses and ancilary information,
My difficulty in choosing is partly due to years of using 3D performance as the metric for ALL cards.

Money is really not a concern, as long as the difference in price is justified. The P4 3.0 is borderline wasteful compared to a 2.8 but that is ok. The video card is the hardest thing to choose, the case is the 2nd hardest. It is just not possible to find a conservative looking case with good airflow for a reasonable amount of money. Everything is tacky, with side windows and all the bells and whistles i DONT need for this rig.

Incidentally the intended specs for the system so far are:
P4 3.0 (800)
Gigabyte GA-8KNXP
2x512 corsair ddr400
2x WD800JB's RAID0
PLEXTOR 708A 8x DVDRW
Audigy2 Pro
Logitech Z560's
Pinnacle digital video card(s)... i forgot which.
