In short, NVIDIA's PhysX technology is slowly taking over the world, and the company's public relations team has far too much time on their hands.

Got to give you credit for finding this Kotaku article, Wreckage.;)

Anyway, I really hope to see PhysX taking over the world, because in its current state doesn't really impresses anyone. It has potential, not doubt about it, but it's not doing anything for the moment.

Wreckage I'm starting to think that you work for ATI and you're trying to give nVidia a bad name. :disgust:

I don't know about taking over the world. Currently it's barely off the ground or is it even? All Nvidia has been doing is marketing the crap out of Cuda and PhysX but not much else. A game here a program there not really game experience changing. I've only played Mirror's Edge with physx and I wasn't all that impressed. If it drops my frame rate in half just to have some debris it's just not worth it. Of course if I have enough frames who wouldn't use it.

I for one really like the PhysX effects implementation in Sacred 2, it really does add to the visual experience and the general game's atmosphere.

Gears of War was great with PhysX. I'm playing Velvet Assassin now and it also uses PhysX effects.

Because of AMDs slacking on hardware physics, physx can't do anything game changing since developers would be excluding too many customers to do it : ( physx won't take over the world till it can actually change the quality of the game and not just the graphics. Sigh, I hate AMD for that.

Why blame AMD? It's my money and I can decide whether or not I need to spend extra to have a card that supports physx (I decided I didn't).

uh... maybe its just u and nvidia that think physx is life-changing. ati may not think so and doesn't want to invest a single doller in physx because its stupid and doesn't change game-play. if you're going to blame AMD you're an idiot. physx still doesn't do anything but throw some garbage in the air and make it fly.

Not really. The only amount that I care for PhysX was clicking on this thread to Post that "I don't care" for PhysX.

PhysX - interesting but I don't see it being the physics api of the future.
Havok has nothing to fear.

On the contrary, Wreckage is a Nvidia zealot. My money has him as an underground member of the Nvidia focus group, or at the very least a wannabe. These kinds of posts all but prove it.

You should him and chizow (and now OCguy too) will tag team any thread in an attempt to make it biased in favor of Nvidia over in the video forums.

AMD absolutely deserves some blame in this. They've held an entire new technology back by nearly 2 years because they didn't want play ball with their competitor who actually developed something or at least build their own physics middleware or even just made a low-level API available.

We aren't even getting OpenCL drivers from them until later in the year, which means we won't see games with GPU-accelerated Havok for at least another 18-24 months.

Whether or not we all end up using PhysX or Havok or some other middleware on a GPU for physics is irrelevant. We could have had gameplay-affecting physics in games by now if AMD hadn't decided to take their ball and go home. They obviously aren't interested in building their own physics middleware, so they didn't have a dog in this game.

"APEX was an important factor in our decision because it enables us to create high quality physics content in an easier and more productive manner."
APEX seems pretty slick IMO.

So is the only thing holding it back from working on AMD cards, AMD?

The problem with any of these systems is you have to look at the overall picture. What gives the developer the most for the least work. Right now that is Havok. Simply because it is a total system that shares its data between all the api it supports. APEX is coming along and gets better all the time.
I'll see if its possible to provide some APEX work later. They were not too clear over what information people could release.

That would be interesting to see if you are able to, Modelworks. :)
