So I bought a new mac laptop and I decided to map my wireless in environment using an app called netspot.
http://www.netspotapp.com
It has an interesting feature that allows you to build a map of the wifi coverage in an area. As I started the survey and clicked through the dialogues I was presented with a page asking me if i wanted to scan additional networks not currently broadcasting. The list was all the wifi access points i had EVER connected to. Places that were unique to ME! On the list was a place I had visited in Mexico with a real weird name, my local hospital, a few hotels with their trademark wifi names, panera and att(starbucks) of course as well as my personal wireless router.

I was stunned that my fingerprint was stored somewhere. Even more stunned to realize that I had never taken this brand new mac anywhere but it knew my history. Apparently, this is old news to the people in the 'know' - Nessus can do this too!

Just this collection of data identifies me uniquely and is better than a fingerprint-it is available in real time and anywhere on the planet to anyone who chooses to look for me.

You could even find out which banks I use, or any other activity where I take my wireless device.

No wonder Putin has decreed that the Russian govt is moving back to typewriters for security.

We didn't bomb ourselves back into the stone age in World War3. We are scaring ourselves back into the stone age in this era of digital terrorism.

You were stunned? That's Apple's claim to fame, ease of use. With ease of use, comes less security.

Apple's not alone in this, it's so popular that everyone wants in on the gig, including our beloved government.
