Every video/DVD I open in WMP is washed out/overly bright

The title summary pretty much says it all, but here's the nitty gritty:

I have a PC running XP/6600GT hooked up to my 1080p LCD via VGA cable. I recently installed WMP10 to play DVDs as well as assorted video files. I had a bitch of a time getting WMP10 to play DVDs due to various codec/permissions issues, though I finally managed it. Unfortunately I'm only 95% of the way there because whenever I load a new file, the video is WAY washed out (looks like the brightness is way up - blacks appear gray, etc - but the actual brightness slider is in the normal spot). I've found I can open the NVidia control panel, click through the monitor calibration routine *without actually making any adjustments*, and then the video is displayed properly. Anyone encountered this before/have a suggestion to correct this?

Thanks.

Edit: I bet it's the same problem that tigersty1e was having here

This happened to me once with my old 6800. I think I did the following: go to the nVidia control panel. There should be adjustments for colors or color profile. Then I think you want to choose advanced mode.

thanks. i was able to fix it in the "Video and Television > Adjust Video Color settings" menu. the RGB gamma was pegged at 100% and apparently my previous fix doesn't save settings.
