I knew I had a replacement part for a home repair somewhere. Spent like 2 hours looking this weekend and couldn't find it so I ordered a new one. New part arrived so 10min into the repair this afternoon I went to get a different tool and right next to that tool was the freaking part I knew I had...

The trick is to keep ordering them so you can't swing a dead cat w/o hitting one.

Probably not a great idea for anything expensive but it's the perfect solution for the cheapies. I think by now I've ordered a couple dozen reading glasses and now they've sorta diffused into the environment and I can't NOT find one.

That's why I keep the replacement parts in/on/under the thing it goes to. Just have to keep other members of the household from 'organizing things'.

All the freaking time lol.

Although it never hurts to own more than one of the same tools. I have like 5+ measuring tapes, hammers, 10+ different screwdriver sets etc so I always have one nearby if need it. Some tools just seem to get lost more than others.

I just got a bunch of cheap plastic calipers. I have no idea what I use them for but I got tired of looking for one.

I couldn't find one set of my keys and changed the lock to my unit's door the next evening. I was going to talk to property management about the main door. Then I found those keys.

I have measuring tapes everywhere.

I have an upstairs, downstairs, garage, and even the downstairs has its situations (kitchen, workroom, front). Just one hammer or screwdriver means a lot of movement that having several eliminates.

Now, I bought a couple hammers a few days ago because I'm like 99% sure someone noticed one I had outside because I was doing a project out there, visible from the sidewalk. I've lost a several things that way. I hate having to worry that someone will steal my stuff. It adds a dimension to my wondering where something is. Almost all the time nobody stole it, I just couldn't find it for the time being. That hammer was a favorite too. Somebody walked off with a hoe that I made out of a file, a stick, a piece of rod and a piece of plate steel and some bolts. It had the virtue of holding an edge, that's why I went to the trouble of making it. Dang the creep who stole it from my yard. A quality hoe is hard to find. I have around 4 and none of them is great.

The place I go to for appliance parts is awesome. It is a one man shop. When you walk in there is a counter with Fred behind the counter. Behind the counter can only be described of rows of shelves with a hodge podge of parts on the shelves. I have gone in there several times with the part and he looks at it, thinks about it for 37 seconds then walks to the unlabeled shelves and pulls out the part.

One time I needed a part that I could not pull out of the heater yet. I had the model and serial number of the heater, the part number of the board and just for grins and giggles I took a picture on the board. I showed him the information and he said that he did not need that. He looked at the picture, and went back and found it on the shelf.

Needed a dryer knob at one of the rentals...act of Congress to find the right fit. Stopped by this roadside joint. "Oh, that goes on a xyz, 1993. Got 1 right here." $5

Edit: that lime green dryer will cook a roast.

Gotta love those old style repair shops. Sadly they are far and few between now as they are not profitable enough to keep up with the ever increasing property taxes and other expenses just to keep the doors open. We had a vacuum shop like that here, the owner knew every little thing about vaccums from old to new models. They recently closed down though. It felt like a time capsule going in there as they had even really old vacuums out.

This was a very long time ago but I'm willing to bet it's still there only because it's a rich area and old rich peeps will pinch a penny till it bleeds. Princeton NJ area.

It was also a vacuum cleaner shop. I had this little Dirt Devil that it was very difficult to find bags for. Also needed the occasional drive belt.

Sewing machine shops are another. Some old sewing machines are really well made, weren't designed to only last a few years.

I don't think property taxes are what drove out vacuum cleaner shops. Just a total shot in the dark guess for sure.
