I actually just saw the miniseries after watching three seasons of BSG first, and was like, why the hate for FTL? You guys sure use it enough later on.

I don't think that was it. Colonel Tigh said something like, "Been a while since we did this." The ship that becomes Colonial One also zips around space at sublight speeds, though we know it can achieve FTL. And even Adama and Tigh were placed on the technologically-ancient Galactica just recently because they fscked up a big mission.
