Every once in a while my pc will lock up after going to screen saver - just a black screen

I don't get any errors or any other type of indication that something is wrong. Just locks up with a black screen. All I can do is reboot.

Anyone know what it could be? Video card? Mobo? Can't replicate the issue and it happens every so often so changing video cards won't really help even though I have another one available

Try installing new videocard drivers or reinstall existing ones if they are up to date. Other details about your system could be useful.. is your vidcard or cpu overclocked, what kind of components, what operating system do you use...

Asus Maximus Formula
4gb RAM
Intel Quad
ATI 4850

No overclocking on the card or cpu. I actually have been trying to install the latest ATI drivers but it keeps crashing my pc. I'm able to uninstall the previous drivers but I can't get the latest drivers to install. Not sure what's going on

You might have bigger problems than your screensaver issue.

How are you trying to uninstall the old drivers?
How are you trying to install the new ones?
Have you tested your RAM for any errors?
Try running Memtest86 for a few passes and report back with results.
