Every iPhone in the world vulnerable to being hacked today?

snippet:

The attack developed by Miller and Mulliner works by exploiting a missing safeguard in the phones' text messaging software that prevents code in the messages' text from overflowing into other parts of the device's memory where it can run as an executable program. The two researchers plan to demonstrate how a series of 512 SMS messages can exploit the bug, with only one of those messages actually appearing on the phone, showing a small square. (Someone could easily design the attack to show a different message or without any visible messages, Miller cautions.) The entire process of infecting an iPhone and then using the device to infect another phone on the user's contact list would take only a few minutes, Miller says.

Is anyone really worried about this?

Buffer overflow in this day and age... probably the oldest hack in existance; this is what happens you have an actually popular product.

thank you for your sagelike advice...

things that get posted in P&N as well as ATOT normally don't get called for repost, why should this?

In any event, too many subforums is the problem. I searched the gadgets and phones forum for this before I posted. Seeing as how I have an iPhone yet NEVER go into the all things apple forum, and I can only assume other iPhone users don't as well, it's good to have this info in both places.

Not really worried about it. Worst case scenario is I have to fully restore my phone. I've jailbroken and restored so much that it isn't a problem anymore. All of my data is backed up on my PC so it wouldn't take long to get everything going again.

For what it's worth, the guy who found this issue says it also affects Windows Mobile as well.
http://www.neowin.net/news/mai...l-be-revealed-tomorrow

Miller also claims he has found a bug in Microsoft's Windows Mobile devices that that allows complete remote control of the device. Miller discovered the bug last Monday and it's currently un-patched by Microsoft. It's not clear whether Miller plans to unveil full details of the Windows Mobile bug tomorrow or limited details until Microsoft has been made aware.

As far as the repost debate, I rarely go to the Apple forum. This was the first time that I've seen this at AT so far. So it wasn't an "R"epost as far as I'm concerned.

I am not aware of the fact that things can be posted in both P&N and OT. If true, I disagree with that.

Why would you assume that? Is everyone on AT just like you?

No, but apparently the mod of this forum is, look above your last post

also a quote from the thread you linked ;)

I post all my iphone stuff in the GGP thread, mainly to avoid the crazed apple users Also because pm always has good info and solid answers for pretty much anything you need in that forum.

Just so I am clear, I can post THE EXACT SAME THING about the iPhone in 'Gadgets Gear and Phones', 'All Things Apple', 'P&N' and 'OT' and the AT management does not have a problem with that?

It's most relevant in here, so pipe down.

That is your opinion. Personally I go to the 'All Things Apple' forum for information regarding the iPhone.

No, I don't think that's allowed. That would be cross-posting - the same user posting the same thing in multiple forums. But if one user posts something in one forum and another user posts the same topic in another forum, I personally don't think that's a repost.

For security related news, in my humble opinion, it's not a bad thing to have the same topic active in multiple forums. And if the problem is severe enough, that might even justify crossposting.

Cross-posting is not allowed, except when it is.

Got it.

No cross posting is when the same thread is posted by the same member across multiple forums. It is not the same as when two different members each post a similar thread in different forums.

Does this affect jailbreaking? I mean I know I'd have to rejailbreak, but would the current tools be alright if the only thing that was changed was the security bug?

You need to wait to hear from the maker of the jailbreak.

I can personally attest that it unjailbreaks iPhone 3GSs and deletes Cydia and all Cydia apps.

I keep forgetting and trying to swipe SBSettings. :(
