I got bored of all the games out right now, played LOTRO, WoW, etc., so I decided to try EQ again while I wait for WHO. Does anyone still play EQ? How hard will it be for me to level up from lvl 1? Will it keep me interested while waiting for WHO to come out?

Well, SOE launched the Combine Progression server a while back, it should be the way to go if you are starting at lvl 1, unless they have allowed character transfers to it.

Yeah, I tried that server several months ago and I rolled a new toon. They also created a free trial zone that had a cap of ten or something and you could choose to move a toon from that zone into the game (progression or another server). I actually liked that newbie zone more than I did the regular retail game zones. I don't think there was an option at that time to move a character over from another server to the progression server.

My biggest impression of the game is that it felt very old. The terrain is very blocky, the map system is pretty awful, and the UI is basic. I rolled a Mage and my pet kept getting lost. The world didn't feel very populated. It was kinda fun to go back in time and play in those areas that I remember (plus some I never got to) but the fun wore off after a month or so.

I can see the attraction of trying to recapture the old EQ magic, but as tempting as that is I don't want to ruin my positive memories (prior to SoE destroying it) of the game.

I played awhile back, got my 60s up to 75. I wouldn't want to start from level 1 again though.

I'm playing the demo. On Monday I'm gonna reactivate my account from 6 years ago. I think I had a level 40something ranger.

You might be able to level quickly but keep in mind the AA's.
;)

There's quite a few of them....

AAs?

Alternate Advancement points.

It may depend on the server for population as well.

Bert may be slower than others like AB or what ever, but you can ask on the forums if you get an account going for what is a good place to start.
The forums always have these newbie questions for new and returning players.

I would still be playing from the November time when EQ II came out, but RL problems came up,
my guild practically folded (I looked on EQ Players 2 weeks ago and
only 3 characters have logged on in the past year). It seems once that time came around back then, the server population on Bert declined alot.
I miss stopping short on completing my paladin's epic 1.5. So many uncompleted quests...sigh...
Many people say Planes of Power caused so many to leave from the key-flagging steps they had
(They changed the way it was originally so it is easier to gain access now.) to the insta-porting around the world through the Plane
of Knowledge. It lost its sense of being a large world.

The original "happenin'" zones were barren 2 years ago (East/West Commonlands with "orc1", "orc2", etc).
Last I heard the better place to level up new is someplace in the expansion, "The Serpent's Spine".
Of course there have been newer expansions since then.

I may try it again to see what servers are busier during prime-time when I have the money and time. Maybe a guild with people that still know me on Bert (originally
from Tholuxe Paells that was merged to it) would have a 67 paladin + alts.
