About 5 years ago (I think) I discovered Everquest. A friend at my job at the time showed it to me. I thought it was the coolest thing ever, I was very impressed with the graphics and idea of the game.

So then I signed up... realized my computer was too slow and eventually upgraded, played some more, and then the Upgrades started coming along to improve the graphics and the expand the playing field. Just before I canceled my subscription, most of the players were off on other planes of existence and my video card was yet again not good enough for proper rendering.

It's been about 4 years. Has EQ gotten any better? Is it worth starting up a character again? Are there any other fantasy role playing games I'm better off looking at?

I wouldn't recommend EQ to worst enemy. I think the most frustrating thing about EQ was the desire to always push new content instead of fix old content. This on top with Sony's desire to always make everything rare spawn, rare drop, camp 12 hours.

I don't know what other fantasy mmorpgs you are better off looking at. Honestly, EQ ruined my desire to play other mmorpgs to a specific degree. Since playing EQ, I've tried Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Final Fantasy XI, and now City of Heroes. Neither has kept my attention for very long. What I am currently looking forward to is World of Warcraft. My hopes is that Blizzard can do it right.

I guess I am not being much help here. I think you could buy EQ today and have some fun, but the time investment would ultimately out weigh the fun return. When I left EQ, there was only a few people leaving the game on a regular basis, but now I hear that people have been leaving in waves. I'm not sure if this applies to all servers or mine alone but I would take that as a bad sign to start playing now.

I feel like I've played so many mmorpgs yet I can't recommend a single one... I'm enjoying CoH at the moment, but I give it a lifetime of a little over a month. Probably the same ammount of time that I spent playing FFXI and Shadowbane. I had 2 level 45+ chars in Shadowbane at the end of my month and the game was boring. In FFXI, after the first month (or maybe it was 2 months), I had a level 33/15 thief/ninja and the game was losing its appeal. In EQ, after 4 years, I had a level 60 Warrior, level 60 cleric, level 59 druid, and level 52 enchanter. I think that accounts for something, but looking back on it, I don't think that was the best way that I could have spent the time. Had lots of my friends not played, I most likely would have quit it sooner.
