Everquest- My first Impressions

I decided to forgo DAoC and bought the first installment of EQ. The Plan being to see if I like it then I will buy the rest. (btw do I need to install the expansions in order? Scars of Velios (sp?) is for sale at a local store for $3).

The first thing that struck me about the game was the graphics. They were bad, really awful. I hear that get better if you get the expansions, i really hope so. Also they game works on Win2k but I get weird glitches

Secondly things mighty confusing. I had done the tutorial but the interface strikes me as clumsy and the inital town layout didnt strike me as very intuitive ( i tried the Woodelf Village). I walked around confused as heck for a while, then after about 15 minutes I get told the servers will be down for 4 hours, yay!

I know many people love this game and I intend to endeavour for a while (or until i breakdown into tears and buy DAoC), it just doesnt strike me as an easy game to get into

Dont flame me if you think i'm just stupid 😉 I've only played quarter of an hour and I'm seriously not trashing the game, just saying it wasn't as cool as I had hoped from the outset

This game isn't an easy game to get into. One of the biggest frustrations with this game is that if you cannot solo alone. You have to go in a group. That's the only way your going to enjoy this game. So you spend all day trying to find a group so you can go out and gain experience point. Also, The game has been out for over 2 years now. So its not going to look that good. The expansion paks do look better, but I've read that the Everquest's last pak demands that you have 512 mb. of RAm in your machine. Anything less and your gameplay suffers. Also, be prepared to spend a lot of time on this game. If you have the hours to level up in this game that's great. But if you don't, you'll probably get pretty frustrated. I've read that on an average Everquest players spent 3 months each year on this game. It is addicting!!!

DAoC is similar to Everquest (some people might say a complete rip-off) but the producers fixed what was wrong with Everquest and just made DAoC that much better!!! The graphics are very good, you can solo alone (and gain experience points), you don't have to invest your life to this game (you can spend an 1-2 hrs. a day or two and see results) and you have PvP (player vs. player) and RvR (realm vs. realm) roles that take place later when you level up. I've heard that when you reach level 40 though, the content gets a little scarce!! Expect lots of improvements with this game!!

Me, I'm waiting for Planetside. It's a first person shooter on-line world and the producer who worked on Tribes 2 got hired to work on Planetside!!
Also, Worldcraft and Starwars looks pretty awesome also. They are both on-line persistent worlds and both will be out in 1-2 years!! They both look incredible!! 🙂

do yourself a favor - uninstall EQ and return it to the store. if not able burn and/or desecrate on the cd. trust me. i wasted a year of my life on that horrible, horrible game. once it's got you in it's paws it just doesn't let go.

Like someone else said, the original Everquest came out way back in April 99. It was in development for at least a year before that, I think the developers actually said they were aiming for Voodoo1 (yes, Voodoo1) cards in terms of video performance. The expansion zones look a little better, and I hear if you have the horsepower, the newest expansion has some very nice graphics.

Kelethin (the wood elf tree town) is probably the worse town to start in. It took me a few weeks to learn the layout (and this was with a map!). I still remember newbies falling to their deaths and stuff, hehe.

These types of MMORPG's are kinda hard to get into at first, and takes a while to get used to the interface and also to learn the lingo. But after a week or 2, you get used to it and that's when the addiction starts. I played EQ for 2 years before I quit, am now on my 2nd month of DAOC.

Welcome aboard, son.

Your ten bucks a month pays for more than just a game; you've just bought yourself a love-hate relationship that might last a lifetime.
