Everquest continues to expand

Seriously EQ just can't die. The original EQ is now getting its 16th expansion, and EQ2 is getting another one and level cap of 90 !

I may have to go back to the first EQ to check out some of the new content.

Eurogamer has a report from the Sony Fain Faire, the annual convention that's now underway in Las Vegas. At the show SOE has announced new expansions for both EverQuest, and EverQuest II, their fantasy-themed MMORPG. The sixth EverQuest II expansion is called Sentinel's Fate, which will increase the level cap to 90 when it is released in February 2010. They say: "Sentinel's Fate will allow you to play older, low-level content with a high-level character and still gain experience. SOE is also integrating various achievements into the game, such as killing 10,000 orcs or reaching level 80 with multiple characters." Also announced is Underfoot, the 16th(!!!) expansion for the first EverQuest, though the only word on this for now is it is planned for release this November, and it will include a new underground zone.

I never played the original EQ nor its sequel, what's the general consensus? Is the original better? And are those games turn-based or more action RPG and pure hack & slash types?

EDIT: Never mind, I just recalled, they are MMORPG's.
 
Why is EQ1 still around when theres an EQ2? Usually the sequal kills off all development on the original game and takes a large chunk of its community too.

Because, to a lot of people, EQ was (and evidently still is) their life. Not a game. Their LIFE.

The real world interactions they encounter only serve to produce money to pay for a PC and subcription fees. And delivery pizza.

I assume WoW will be the same way when more advanced MMORPGs come long.
 
EQ2 was pretty good, I wound up quitting because of time constraints.

The content was fantastic though, and the mentoring system makes grouping with friends easy.

6.60 GB (7,093,287,324 bytes)

(that is with 15 expansions)

I have it installed on my computer, even though I haven't played for a month, I moved over to Vanguard.

The gameplay is completely different (or was at the time EQ2 came around). However, EQ1 has slowly moved over to the gameplay of EQ2 so its alot closer now. But I'm guessing at this point people put so much time into their characters they just don't want to let go.

I see some people 6 boxing characters (6 computers) all level 85 with 3000 alternative experience levels. That's one reason why I quit playing. Because you can never find a group when everybody plays a group themselves.

Those are my fondest memories of EQ, multiboxing a party with a friend, showeq and MQ. We could do some pretty amazing things...😉
 
i played both. I quite EQ1 when EQ2 came out. i got into EQ2 at launch and played until the first exp pack. I was in a the top (well in the top 3) guild on the server. But i got bored and took a break for like 3 months. when i cam back the guild was dead (they went to WOW). i had no desier to play wow at the time.

I looked on EQ2 charectors to see if my guy was there. nope its gone. pity to i was going to log in and play heh

Because EQ2, when released, was Everquest in name only, and frankly, sucked. A lot of people stayed with EQ 1. And apparently, still have.

I see, a bit like the dawn of war RTS games then, although its a bit too early to tell i imagine a chunk of people will likely stick with the first game and its expansions.

Unless you deleted your character(s), they're still there.

The original Asheron's Call (another old, though less popular, MMO) is still alive, while Asheron's Call 2 died out about a year after release. I played both - AC for about 4-5 years, and AC2 for about two months - and while the second had breath taking graphics, (during it's time, the graphics were comparable to what Crysis is today), the game play was horrible. The original AC is still my favorite game of all time, but it's nothing without the community it used to carry.
