I never played this, but that is a good thing, since I was addicted to EQ!.
Did it ever have the magic of EQ1?
A whole lot of folks seemed to liek WOW, but i never thought it had near the magic of EQ.

The magic of EQ1 was due to its passionate, talented lead developer Brad McQuaid and his team. Most of them left in 2001 & 2002, which is one reason the game started getting bad then. EQ2 didn't come out till 2004. Brad & crew are now working on Vanguard, so as Oakenfold mentioned, it may well be worth waiting for.

I can't follow VG too closely, it gets me too nostalgic toward EQ and hateful toward Blizzard and especially Sony. In the interest of my sanity I've taken up an "I'll play it when it's ready" mentality and don't give it any thought beyond that. I did get a beta invite, but I betatested EQ for so many years I'd rather just wait till VG is live.

GAH, send me your invite! lol =)
I'm dying to at least hear firsthand how the game is looking, or better yet to see it myself...

Telling us about getting an unused invite is just cruel....

:)

I think it does. I know it isnt a popular opinion, but my girlfriend and I love it. I guess it just depends on what particular aspect of EQ1 you like the most. EQ2 is definately less challenging, so I am starting to question its staying power. If/when we get tired of it hopefully one of the next gen MMORPGs are out. WoW didnt really "do it" for us either.

What my group of friends found was that EQ2 didn't have the same impact as EQ1 because of multiple features. First off, there are only 2 main towns, which kills the sort of mystery the first EQ had in regards to where you started and what was a danger to you. Having Neriak and Freeport so close was always fun. Secondly, encounters are locked, not only can you not hit something another person is fighting, but you can't even heal them. This accompanied with random instancing breaks up the society that EQ1 maintained, one where everyone around you could help or hurt you was a big part of the experience. In EQ2, unless you are grouped, everyone else might as well just be NPCs.

The game feels very dumbed down too. Death is much less of a scare than it was in EQ1. The battle system didn't feel like it was rewarding. All the encounters are pre-rated so there is no guessing as to what you are stepping into.

Personally, I had more fun going back to EQ1. We went back last month and AE'd sebilis a bit for old times sake.

EQ2 didn't do it for me either. The gameplay seem to controlled and kind of boring. I didn't like the whole locked encounter thing and fact there were only two starting towns. Plus, the game always seemed empty. I'm not asking for a place as crowded as the PoK or the Bazaar, but i at least want to see someone so i could interact with them.

Also, the community was a lot less friendly and fun. I miss the old EQ days, so i hope Vanguard fixes my need.

Locked enounters are optional now btw, and are turned off by default.

Not even close to worth $100 at this point. LOOOONG ways to go. There are some good things showing, the first big city (New Targonarr) looks AMAZING. Absolutely huge and beautiful. Diplomacy is actually decently fun. Combat atm isn't very fun. Theres a hint of EQ1 around, but I wouldn't recommend looking for EQ1 reincarnate, its not going to happen, ever. Our virginity has been taken, we don't get it back.

Thanks for the synopsis BP, personally I'm not looking for EQ1 relived (though I wouldn't complain :p), just something a little more .. multidimensional than WoW. Looney, sorry but I'm not interested in doing that and it would probably violate their ToS anyway.

What do you care? It's $100 in your pocket! If it's legitimate. I doubt it is. You're probably confusing your invite to sign up for the beta, with the actual beta invite. All registered forum members got the email telling them to sign up for the invite.

It's legitimate, I was bored out of my gourd during my 6-month hiatus from WoW and figured beta > nothing. But.. no :)

I take it that you tried the beta and it sucked, therefore you are waiting for the finished product, praying, that it does not suck as well?

No, I applied for the beta since I wasn't playing WoW and was bored. By the time I received the invite I had reinstated my WoW account and had something to occupy my free time.

That is a relief.

I played a game for 5 years which, during the latter half of that era, had devs ignore huge numbers of game-breaking bugs in order to push out more expansions faster. I'm sick of it. I don't want to deal with a large number of bugs (eg. a beta) since I've been there & done that. I'm patient. And, since I care about VG (and have $$$), I don't care to risk compromising it by aiding people who don't meet their tester criteria in beta-testing it. Especially for pocket change. Personally I don't even understand the urge to betatest software. I considered it only out of desperation, and quickly came to my senses. God, if World of Bugcraft is a finished product, I don't want to think about real betas.. *shiver*

ps. Schad - the "no :)" was to Looney, not in reference to VG. Sorry for the confusion :)

That you got into beta. You didn't even check it out? Or give it to a friend? There's hardly any criteria for beta-testing. Lets see a screenshot of the email with your pertinent info blacked out.

Saying you don't meet their criteria isn't a putdown, it's just... who knows, maybe they only want people with a certain brand of ram or model & stepping of CPU... who knows? The point is they send out invitations based on that and having someone who doesn't fit that criteria (eg. you) could conceivably help in compromising the game's integrity. I don't care about much in this world - 95% of the population could die from Captain Tripps and if anything I'd be glad. But I do care about Vanguard, and I'm not going to risk harming it. Sorry you're so sore about it, but stop blaming me~

Certain brand of ram and stepping of CPUs? LOLOLOL If you even APPLIED for the beta, you would know they never asked for this kind of information.

I don't know why you need to lie about getting into beta. Does it really make you feel special to tell people that?
