http://www.everex.com/

It's posted right on their home page, to be available at Walmart by the end of this month.

1.2GHz Via C7
512MB RAM
30GB HDD
7" 800x480 display
VIA UniChrome IGP
VIA HD audio
802.11b/g
10/100 NIC
DVI-I port
2 USB ports
flash card reader
1.3MP webcam
2 pounds
5 hour battery life
gOS
$399

I wonder if the RAM will be upgradable, and if the 1.2GHz C7 chip is as fast as the Celeron in the Eee PC running at, what, 570MHz or so? The more important thing is... does it really get 5 hours of battery life?

eeePC runs at 630MHz. Isn't the 1.2GHz C7 equivalent to a 800MHz PIII?

Edit: no mentioning of Windows support?

The 4G models run at 630MHz, and I think the 2G Surf runs at 570MHz and has the L2 cache disabled.

Looks pretty good for the price, especially w/5 hours battery life. To get that on the EEE you'd need to buy an extended battery, so when you factor that in it just adds to the value of the Cloudbook.

Not a big fan of the looks, though. I don't like that whole offset screen thing and the huge space under the LCD bezel.

The DVI port and battery life is nice. Wish it was more competition though. Higher screen resolution or cheaper..

I bought my ex an Everex NB with a 1.5GHz C7 and it was very very slow. It couldn't decode DVD video without dropping frames iirc. Fortunately, there was some hardware acceleration available on the integrated graphics for mpeg2 decoding. Even with that working though, the cpu was still 50 - 70% during a dvd video.

another link

Thanks to Crucial for posting that link in another thread. For me the Cloudbook is the Eee with a 30GB HDD instead of a flash drive, plus better battery life. I'm now thinking this would be a nice little device. With a full battery charge I would not have to carry the AC adaptor and the device is so small/light that it would be easier to carry around.

i've wanted the nanobook/cloudbook for a year or so, when i first heard rumours of it, unfortunately via has a horrible time to market.
so i had to pick up a 4G Eee

now i'm considering trading/selling the Eee to someone (could just end up with both, as i do like my Eee), but first i wanna see the benchmarks, battery life, side by side comparisons
the extra hard drive space and potential for 5hrs of batt life is compelling, not to mention the rumours of the "developer version" with touchscreen and module bay to install GPS ....

we'll see

found it

Packard Bell Easynote XS UMPC

Sounds like it is quite expensive compared to the $400 Walmart special, but comes with double the RAM at 1GB and Windows.

That touchpad design is unusual. While not so good for desktop use, I'd say that it may end up being better for lap-top use. I had a wireless HTPC keyboard that had the same design (though with a trackball and not touchpad) and it was quite nice to use sitting at the couch with it in my lap. Not too big a deal with having to move the hands from the keyboard because most desktop users have to do that anyways to reach their mouse.

I'm still pretty excited about it.

yeah that's an odd design, but i doubt the everex will be identical to the packard bell model
there is also a korean version that came out a few months ago made by a different company..... i forget the name tho.

LOL Via is disabling caches for the lower end market? They need all the damn performance they can get from their horrible little CPUs.

They should make a tablet version

No, he's talking about the Asus Eee PC that uses Intel CPUs.

You've got to look at the target market and audience.

One does not need a Q6600 to browse the web, send email, and conduct a video chat.

VIA isn't my favorite company, and no one mistakes their chips for top performers, but they're fine for the segment they're used in.

I'll keep my 4G.

The Cloudbook is an ugly machine.
The touchpad just plain sucks.
Looks like memory can't be upgraded and, is stuck @ 512mb.
Slowwww ass harddrive.
I could go on and on.

I am glad that the E has some competition though.

actually as i am learning even a 570 MHz Pentium M ( with no cache) isn 't enough to run skype voice in windows (works well in linux dunno why). so i'd say a minimum processor threashlod has been reached. 600Mhz on a core achitecture is the absolute min for even word processing and voip.

Either less overhead, or better thread scheduling.

I'm not sure the Isaiah chip will be out in time, but if so that would be awesome!

so it sports a unichrome for vga. If it is anything like what I had on that free soyo s478 mobo, it is alright for general desktop use.

the biggest qualm I had with it was how it choked on HD sized material (nothing insane like hdwmv, either - just tv shows encoded in divx 6.x). the problem perished once I put a moderately new discreet vga card, so I am sure it was the unichrome.

never got to try any gaming on it, but I would not get my hopes up about it. While I dont play the same demanding games most people do around here, but 800x480 is a bit tough for any kind of mmorpg...

trying to decide if I want this or get something full sized and be able to play games on it...

Neither this nor the Eee PC would be suitable for "real" gaming, though some games will work. If you want a really small notebook that can play games, look into something like the Dell XPS1330.
