Everest vs. AsusProbe Temperatures

I have a question on reading temps from Asus PC Probe and Everest. They both display the same motherboard temperature, but while the CPU reading in Everest is always much lower, it does have an "Aux" reading which is in sync with PC Probe's. Currently for instance:

AsusProbe
CPU: 44C
MB: 47C

Everest
CPU: 36C
MB: 47C
Aux: 44C

Why the difference? Is Everest's CPU reading faulty? Are there two different sensors on the CPU, and if so which one should I be paying more attention to?

...I just checked SiSoftware Sandra, and it has the same three readings as Everest, but it has all three swapped:

CPU: 47C
MB: 44C
Aux: 36C

As long as they're reporting the same temps... I remember MBM swapping two temperature readings as well...

What does your BIOS say...? The 36°C idle temp seems perfectly normal if you're running an AMD Athlon 64... It's a bug, but not one of the kind you should start panicking...

Well, I would be perfectly fine if the 36C temp were right, but all three programs report a different temperature for the CPU. Not sure which one to trust. I am a little concerened if its idling in the mid-40s. I'll try checking the BIOS and assume its the most accurate, unless there's a bug there....

Just leave a monitor running and run a Prime95 torture test... the temp that quickly climbs 6-7 degrees in the first minutes is the cpu.

Hmm, an overclocked Winchester should stay reasonable cool, especially with that Zalman... It could as well be the 44°C, but the 36°C one seems more "real" to me... My Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 (non-Pro), which cools roughly equal to yours, keeps my overclocked Venice @ 2.4GHz at 32°C idle... The Winchester's a 90nm product as well, so I don't expect them to deviate a lot...

professor1942's advice is right... Give it a try...

Heh, I just used the arithmetic benchmark in Sandra, and both the CPU and Aux readings in Everest went up by several degrees (CPU went up 8C and Aux went up 4C). There wouldn't be another sensor on the heatsink or something...?

Oh well. I've never seen either go above 50 or 55, so it isn't a big cause for worry. It's probably a no brainer, but especially with this Lian Li case ambient room temp and air circulation make a huge difference. Just having my windows open on a cool day drops the readings by 5-6C within a few minutes.

LOL... So far for the good advice... 😛 I really think Everest is the right one... 36 + 8 = 44°C, while mine reaches 40°C under load... I think it is right...

With a Lian-Li that sports decent air flow, you shouldn't be worried... Maybe try an obsolete thermometre, and measure at the back side of your mobo, right in the center of the CPU... Or, as low as you can go on your heatsink, could work out as well...
