ever worked in collections?

What's it like working as a collector? I'm in need of $ and I've been pondering the adverts for collection jobs, figuring perhaps it would at least be better than telemarketing -- which is a job I will never do unless someone puts a gun to my head. People don't seem to want to hire me for normal CSR kinds of jobs 🙁

So what does this job consist of? Calling people up and harassing them and/or *convincing* them to pay you? Calling up their relatives etc? Does this mostly consist of trying to keep calling people and keep trying to get them to pay? I'm curious just *how* horrible a job it is and just how poed people are on the phone.

I've also seen things about inbound and outbound calls, I'm assuming the inbound stuff is people returning phone calls and the outbound is harassing people.. 🙂

I'm quite sure it would be worse than telemarketing.

Nothing worse than collection agency calls. It's one thing to call someone up and try to get them to buy something. It's another to call someone up and demand their money.

<heartless> Well if they won't pay their d**ned bill, of course they should get a call from the collector! Little thieves! </heartless> 😉

Yeah, like I'm one to talk. hehe. Yeah, I'm sure it's gotta suck bigtime, cause I've tried calling up delinquent customers before and gotten words and names thrown at me that would burn down a forest in 20 seconds! That's some crazy stuff.

It's better than telemarketing.

If you really need the $, you may become good at it and enjoy the job.

I used to work next to our bank's collections department and the phone calls can get nasty!

That's why whenever I apply for credit/loans I use a voice mail only phone number, they never have my REAL phone number just a message number 😉

Smart idea. Cause if the bank wants to get all big and bad with me I can always fight back by making their life misserable. It's always nice when you can take a big, bad, thinks he owns the world banker and shut them down with one simple reply. "Yeah, I got your money. You want it? Fine, then if you REALLY want it, we talk, and we talk cival. If you want to be a blockhead and want to keep this up, then you'll never get it back. Understand? It's that simple. We talk, you be nice, you get your money back. You threaten me, especially with any kind of legal action and you can forget ever getting your money back." Be tough and stern and in charge while remaining polite and keep a normal voice. The only way you're going to win that argument is if you remain in control. You start arguing, you loose, he wins. Plain and simple. 😀

The bank doesn't even know where I live 😀

So they couldn't repo our car even if they wanted to.

They don't have to know where you live. That's up to the repo guy to find out. And trust me, at nearly $2000 a capture, they sure as H*** aren't going to let you get away. They wanna repo your car, it's theirs. It's only a matter of time.

They had a show on Repo Men. I think it was The Learning Channel or something similar. It was a great show. This car dealer went under, and the bank hired this Repo Agency to get something like 30 Kias back...
