Ever work in a steel mill?

I gotta spend part of a day or so next week near a big electric arc furnace.

Someone told me it is extremely loud and the whole floor shakes when the lightening action begins. (but this guy is notorious for exaggerating)

 
Never been in one...but be careful. Saw the movie The Machinist and it made me never want to step foot inside a factory...
 
I worked in an aluminum extrusion mill next to a gas-fired oven in the summer back when I was going to school and it was real toasty... I had salt stains from all the sweat.

This guy told me about a freak accident last year at the mill I'm going to next week. This worker had the front half of his foot severed off.

I've worked at all types of steel mills. The electric furnaces are kindda crazy to see...

If you get a chance to see a rolling mill in action, check it out. Pretty cool stuff...

yes I work in a steel mill, and the furnances where I worked at are extremely loud

 
I work at a pulp mill, and some of the machinery, and the blast furnance shakes the floor quite often. Fortunately I'm in Systems, and rarely have to traverse the dangerous portions of the mill.
 
nothing like welding on a repair in the middle of summer on the casthouse floor of a live blast furnace...or working on the coke batteries...so hot you have to wear wooden blocks on your boots to keep them from melting🙂

i've worked in a few factories, and on some pretty hot jobs as well, such as welders & steel cylinder fabricating machines.

just be sure to have some good safety glasses and boots! 🙂
 
Yeah, I've worked in a steel mill....spent 3 summers in the melt shop. Electric Arc Furnaces are loud and yes, the floor will shake. Depending on how close you are too the furnace they may issue you "silvers"...wear them. They reflect some of the heat. Also, depending on how close you are to the furnace, I suggest wearing thermal underwear. They work quite well at insulating you from the heat. Hopefully you will be there long enough for a tap. Watching them tilt the furnace into a ladle is quite impressive.

Also: DO NOT wear contact lenses.

i'd never think to NOT wear contact lenses at a steel mill, but i suppose its one of the things that might be commonly overlooked 🙂

Alot of people leave them in without thinking about it. Personally, working in the melt shop was quite interesting and I'm glad I worked there.
