I think they just did that because they wanted to pour cement down an antbed like we would want to pour hot water down an antbed when we were kids. ;)

That's pretty cool, however, they pumped an ant colony full of concrete thus destroying generations of ants, and tore up the land for the sake of curiosity? What else can we destroy just to destroy?

I used to have yellow jacket nests in the dirt in my back yard and wondered what would happen if I poured a gallon or two of gasoline down the hole and lit it. I never tried because I would have felt bad for killing them all for no real reason.

Obviously they were compensated for their labor but the big picture is that a group of archaeologists/scientists were bored one day and decided that demolishing some land and killing millions of ants would be a great leap in science.
