Ever wonder if they're just abusing their power to get through traffic?

I actually witnessed this today...:(

Of course they are. I've seen it dozens of times. As soon as they hit the off ramp, the lights go out.

It's worse out here in corn country - the cops think they own the place.

And they kinda do. :Q

Around here, many cops turn on their lights just to go through a red light, and then they turn them off... pisses me off...

True story - I was behind a city cop who put his siren on to get through a series of red lights and pass downtown traffic. I was heading in the same direction, and although I lost sight of him, I found him again when I got where I was going. The grocery store's bakery. He was picking up a cake.

I'm almost sure the cake was some sort of evidence for a big murder case though, so it was ok. ;)

I actually had job offers to be a cop, then I looked at the IT world and saw I could make 10-15K more a year without being shot at, and I made the right choice.

I have seen a cop put on his lights to get through a traffic jam then turn them right back off again once through, but then again every job has it's perks :)

I used to live in a smaller town in Upper Michigan. Was driving through a bigger town about 100 miles away and saw a hometown police car parked in front of the Dunkin Donuts, I'm sure he was probably on a trip or something, but couldn't help thinking, there is one way to burn through a long shift....... ;)

Not all of these instances was a cop abusing his power. Officers don't like to leave their lights and sirens on when responding to a call since it alerts the perpetrators that an officer is enroute, giving them time to run. I'm not saying that's the case all the time because they do assuredly abuse the lights/siren, but my friend was a cop for four years and said that was a consideration a lot of times.

BTW, the officers are breaking the law when they do use their lights when not responding to a call.

You must realize that sometimes they may get a call then it is dismissed...

I was talking to a cop on the weekend and my gf asked "Do you get a rush when you turn on the sirens, cause I get one when i see you guys do it!" and he said "Oh yeah!" and his face totally lit up. He said he sometimes types in to dispatch on his computer that he wants a call where he has to use sirens :)

The money isn't as good as IT, but seriously talk to a cop for a couple of hours and you may start wanting a change in vocation - BTW we're in a pretty safe city, so cops around here don't die with any sort of frequency. Damn, in Canada as a whole if a cop dies its on the news and there are flag ceremonies and what not.

I had a friend who was an ambulance driver, and, sadly, he would take calls that were nowhere near his current location just so he could drive like a maniac with sirens blazing to get to the scene.

Geez, that would endanger the victim, no? The idea is to get the closest ambulance to the scene to get the ppl to the hospital ASAP, right?

Went on a ride-along with my brother-in-law when a call came through about a fight with guns involved. Pretty intense, happened close to afternoon rush hour, we were about a mile away, pedal to the metal, through city streets with sirens blasting. Needless to say, it was just two retards fighting but, that ride sure got my adrenaline pumping.

I have seen LAFD (Los Angeles Fire Department) racing to the scene of a bank (with sirens on) only to withdrawl money out of an ATM. Then once done with that go with sirens blasting somewhere.

I havent seen much of that in Glendale, though I have seen cops turn on their lights for a second so the light turns green for them.
