Stearns, already a world champion skydiver and professional pilot, starts this weekend to prepare to jump from a dizzying 165,000 feet above the Earth. That's a fall of thirty-one-and-a-quarter miles ? straight down.

Because the jump will start in sub-orbital space, she'll be wearing a pressure suit ? virtually a customized spacesuit adapted for her unique quest. During the first minute of the fall there will be so little air to fall through that she will quickly reach speeds between mach 1.3 and 1.5, before slowing down in the thicker air of the lower atmosphere.

wow :)

Man that's awesome.

I jumped from 1000 feet with static line and that's a rush in itself.

Sub-orbital space. Whoaaaaaaa.

I jumped from 3000 on my first and so far only jump - it also auto-pulled, still an insane rush!

Man, that's awesome. That speed is insane for the human body... They'll have to have some sort of other camera as a reference to record it, because she's not going to be able to tell how fast she's going, she won't feel it at all... Just see earth rushing up to meet her:)

This was a fine post. It just happened to appear within minutes of several other threads being started by Czar. I just chose this one to call him a nef. :)

Also, notice the ;) following my calling him a nef. Czar and I give each other crap from time to time. :)

Funny, when I read the original post, I thought the space suite needed to be customized for her unique CHEST. I guess my mind is in the gutter today!

BoberFett ;)

To bad that one of my post was locked, even though it was just a link to a news picture on Yahoo, oh well, I´ll probably post more of these "off topic" posts today :p

I wonder if she'll turn into a cinder.

Where does the money for this kind of crap come from anyway?

loctusofboard, Hmm.... to reach orbit if I'm not mistaken you have to go in excess of mach 17+ so when the shuttle reenters the atmosphere it's doing about mach 17 or so. I don't think (but I sure would hate to be wrong)that she is anywhere near "burn up" speed at mach 1.5 considering how thin the atmosphere is way up there. Besides I doubt she would be aerodynamic enough to go fast enough at any altitude (within the atmosphere) Although they have tracked geese flying over Mt Everest at 29k+ feet. I don't know when she plans to open her chute, but I'd sure hate to have a chance encounter with a 20lb bird while still at terminal velocity at 29k feet. Come to think of it that does sound like it would be one ROCKIN experience(the freefall, not the meeting with a 20lb bird)

I wonder what it's going to be like breaking the sonic barrier in a "space suit". I hope they get the sonic boom on tape too!
