Ever use your cell phone while on an airplane?

Have any of you ever used your cell phone while on an airplane? Just wondering...I don't see how it could be an issue. I know people who use their Blackberry while in flight all the time, and it doesn't seem to be an issue. Is it because they want you to use their super expensive satellite phone? I've also heard that it makes cell phone towers work overtime to handoff your calls since you are going ~500mph, but other then that it seems like it should work fine. Comments?

i'm scared enough of crashing that if they told me not to go to the bathroom while in flight i probably wouldn't do it

No. And I hope people around you give you a nice hard stare if you do decide to use it while in flight. I talk while still boarding, but when they say off... it goes off.

Your cell phone signal is picked up by too many towers. Also there is the small small chance that your transmission could interfere with electronic equipment on board.

I've accidentally left my phone on before, and when I looked at the signal it only had one bar. I left it on for a little bit longer and never got a great signal. I wouldn't do it simply because the FAA and the airlines don't want you using it when on the flight. Plus, the attendants will probably get pissed as well.

I prefered your name when it was Millennium 🙁

Yes.

Only reason they don't want you to use your cellphone is that they want to charge you an arm and leg to use the airplane satellite phone.

Yah... that's the case too when they don't even have a phone on board. Right. 😕

You should be able to get signal very easily....towers are rated at 6miles of signal, which equals 42,240 ft, and passenger jets usually fly around 35,000 I believe. Either way, doesn't seem like using it would be a real big problem, but the question was just theoretical anyway.

well, if you're in an area on the ground that doesn't get great reception to begin with, then you're screwed. you can only be so far from the tower (measured along the ground, that is) until the pythagorean theorem starts to pwn your call.

What's the average flight, a few hours for the most part? You can't go that long with some pointless non-emergency conversation? If they say cell phones off, why do you have to be a rebel and defy FAA rules?

It does confuse me though, how if your in economy flights they say dont use laptops or anything electronical, but then in first class people can use laptops...

All seems like a big scam to me

Ive never been on a flight where they said i couldnt use my laptop or other electronics EXCEPT a cellphone and i definitely wasnt in first class. They just tell you to keep if off while they are taking off and until they hit their desired altitude, and then they tell you to turn if off again when they prepare for landing.

disobeying an order from a flight attendant can get you in trouble if you're a big enough dick about it. if you really want to give them a hard time they won't mind having law enforcement meet you at the gate when you land.

Yeah, seriously...the only thing I could see myself doing is plopping the phone in the seat pocket and connecting to the internet if that would even work...
