MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!! Diebels Alt! I loved that brew when i went to Germany with my highschool exchange program... That was seven years ago! Where can i get that in America?!?!? >>



I know that some distributor is selling Diebels Alt in San Diego but that's it as far as I know. I did not drink Diebels for 8 months now (last time I went to Germany)
I am German and I used to drink Diebels Alt for years. All the German beer that I can buy here in America is the stuff that I would never drink in Germany because there is so much better stuff out there!

Dude man that bottle brings back memories!!! When I was stationed in Germany we called that stuff the Terminator. I can not tell you how many of those i sucked down.

but if you want a beer that will rock your world get a beer from Belgium called Duval. 14% baby !!! I had to go to Holland one time to get qualified on the MK-19 and a Dutch soldier told me about Duval. Well later that night a bunch of were sitting at the hotel bar drinking some Heiniken RED STAR and i already had like 3 in me and wasnt feeling a thing. I remembered what the Dutch soldier told me so i go up to the bartender and ask for one. He gets the bottle and ask me if i know how to drink it. Well since he asked such a question for a reason i said no. he pours most of it in a glass and the last part he pours in a shot glass and its a white paste he said dont drink that it will make you sick. so anyway to make a long story short, i drank that one beer and i do not remember how i got back to my room! ahhhh the good ole days.

Dos Equis is pretty good. Beats corona, and that's pretty good itself. Too bad it's not (widely) available north of Mexico (to my knowledge, anyway).

I would put it more like this: Beer - hops = Germany = Beer with no fragrance and insufficient bitterness. The German Rheinheitsgebut (sp?) is a brewing purity law that prohibits making beer with any ingredients other than grain and water. There are certainly plenty of competent German breweries, but I find German beer essentially lacks character because they are precluded from flavoring with hops. I think on the whole the best beer in the world is made in American microbreweries, but to me the most interesting styles of beer (the beer cuisine, for lack of a better work) come from England.

Pilsner Urquell USED to be an awesome beer. I drank it in the seventies on occassion when living in beertown, USA (ie Milwaukee). The last two times I bought a six pack (different stores, several months apart) is was so skunky as to be undrinkable. The trouble with drinking small imported beers in the US is that frequently they are on the boat or shelf for so long they go bad. Anyone know any solutions to this? I hate spending big bucks on imports only to have them taste like cr*p.

Any beer that ends in -ator is a Dopplebock (double bock) and most are from Germany. They're all pretty high in alcohol content, so 7.4% is about average for the style. As German beers go, Spaten is swill, it's the stuff they export because the locals don't want it. Optimator is okay, probably the best of the Spatens IMHO, but if you like that you should try Ayinger's Celebrator or Paulaner's Salvator which are way better and should be pretty easy to find in a package store with a good import selection. Or if you're really feeling adventurous, pick up a bottle or two (I think the bottles are only about 7oz) of Sam Adams Triple Bock. It's truly amazing stuff.
