Ever tried/wonder what unsweetened soda might taste like?

And I'm not talking about seltzer/carbonated water. Talking about coke/pepsi, mountain dew, etc before the sugar are added in. Maybe not even completely sweetened, just mildly. Soda is great, but sometimes, I think it's too sweet and wish I could sweeten it myself to my liking. Just a thought!

There are whole brands of soda, like GUS and Izze that are just what you are talking about. Usually fruit flavors or ginger and the like. Don't know if there's a cola, though there might be. They are nice and tart, not sweet at all.

I make my own with SodaStream products. They're sweetened, but with Sucralose or something (not HFCS), so it's different. I find if you use the full amount there's an aftertaste, so I use like half that. It means there's less than 1/8 the sugar content vs. regular branded colas, but it tastes like diet (which I'm fine with).

Sometimes I miss the full sweetness of Coke or orange Crush.

wife and i drink sodastream carbonated water every night. we tried some of the soda packets that came with it and i thought they were vile. BUT, im very sensitive to any alternative low-cal sweetener (think they all taste disgusting). i was disappointed they werent real sugar.

I tried putting a packet of splenda into a can of seltzer water once, it foamed violently and spilled into my lap. :\

I've gotten soda from a fountain machine that was out of syrup, so it was just the soda water, and it tasted awful.

In Las Vegas on the Strip there is a M&M's/Coke/Ethel M place. On the very top floor of the Coke area they used to have this giant soda fountain set up with Coke products/flavors that are popular in different parts of the world for visitors to try. For example, I guess in certain parts of Africa apple-flavored soda is really popular so they had that to try. I don't remember the vast majority of flavors they had but I do remember the French flavor: it was cola, but clear (like Crystal Pepsi) and instead of sweet it was bitter. I don't remember the name of it at all, I just remember that in the late 80s/early 90s apparently France was obsessed with bitter tasting clear cola.

I went to the coke museum in Atlanta where they have a similar set up. There was this thing called Beverly from Italy. Holy shit that was the most vile thing I've ever tasted.

Ehh I don't drink pop any more, but, I've never thought of it as "too sweet." It's supposed to be sweet. Also, it's not really any sweeter than most juice. That said, diet pop tastes horrible.

Get some seltzer and add lemon and lime juice.
And you have 7-Up unsweetened.

Izze is ridiculously sweet. It's carbonated sugar-water with a tiny bit of fruit flavor D:

I've heard that without sugar you would immediately spit out most drinks because of the amount of acid that they add. I have also heard that if you took out the acid you would immediately spit it out because of how sweet it would be.

Hmm... 12% juice. That means it's 88% other stuff(sugar?) :^D 12% might be "a lot" for kids drinks, but the juice I get is usually pretty close to 100% juice.

Soda in other countries than the US I have come to find are much less sweeter. The Coke in South-East Asia has much less flavor to it as does the European varieties (though I do not think they are as weak as the stuff here). Thailand has the weakest that I have tried. The Thai Coke is barely more than colored seltzer water. I actually sat my friends down to a taste test. We had Hong Kong, French and American Coke and we all preferred the American Coke by far. It was sweeter, had stronger flavors of vanilla and we didn't care that it used HFCS and the others used sugar. The American palatte is very much on the strong flavor and sweet side.

Add some lemon lime regular kool-aid to Soda water.
