Yes. Once an infected one was removed after being numbed, once an infected one was removed without being numbed because "there were a lot of sick kids in the waiting room". Got oxycodone both times and it grew back just fine.

Where's that damn pics! And did you go to a podiatrist? You don't want funky man big toe, do you?

Trust me, I've had a ton of big toe nail work because of a lifetime of ingrown toenails. A good podiatrist is a god send.

Update1:
Well, the nail is still attached at the base but it's definitely not attached anywhere up to the tip. If not taped down, it floats up about 1/8". Doesn't hurt, and the skin under the nail is healthy (I can peer into it, weird...) thanks to hydrogen peroxide and topical penicillin. Thanks for all the help, guys!

I don't have any black whatsoever. I think because I ripped the nail up rather than smashed it, there was no bruising and amazingly little blood.

Give it a couple of weeks. The new nail will grow in and SHOULD push the old nail loose.

I smashed my thumb in a piece of machinery about 30 years ago. It almost cut my dammed thumb off, but I yanked the thumb out as it closed on it...and ripped the thumbnail out from the back side...that hurt like a sumbitch...also broke the end of the thumb into 8 pieces that could be seen in the x-ray...and the docs discussed just amputating it at the joint...and I told them to get fucked...if the machine didn't cut it off...neither were they.

I learned about drinking Scotch and taking percodan....

You're going to need lots of PATIENCE with the nail growing back.

The naked skin will harden. As the nail grows back, it'll cover the hardened skin whihc basically means you'll have two hard surfaces that are not meshing together.

From this point on, the nail or part of the nail may come off as you're picking on it.

If you're lucky, the skin below the nail will become soft and pliable enough for the nail to make a nice secure fit.

It will take time.......

I've had a number of ingrown toenails that have required the nail to be removed. Its not that bad. But the nail will take several months to grow back.

There is no naked skin. To glance at it, my toe looks normal, nail still in place. It's growing out normally right now; I trimmed the top of it yesterday. Just isn't attached to the skin. The bottom of the nail that's growing out looks totally normal.

I was removing a 45 of a barbell and forgot there was a 35 on the outside...blam! right on to my big toe. After i saw the blood Squirt and writhing in pain I told my brother to go upstairs and get something. He comes back with a fuckin small ass band aid....
I literally wanted to kill him right then and there.

Anyways, the er doc had to rip it off. I think the most painfull part was the nerve block. I think it was like 8-10 injections of marcaine into my poor toe. Each one made me want to faint. I had to get the stitches off @ school and lucky me gets an intern who didn't know wtf he was doing. He would ask me, "if I pull on the stiches here, do you see it move here?" I just thought to myself, this is gonna hurt again. Eventually he gave up and got someone else to do it.

It grew back, but it's noticably thicker than the other one

Holy shit dude...I just did the same thing about a week ago. I went to the ER at 4 am (no one was there) shot me up with lidocaine and ended up stitching it back on. That actually shocked me as I figured they would completely remove it but the Doc said it would heal faster if it was reattached. Mine was the same as yours, ripped all the way off except for a just hanging on by a piece of skin at the base.

This was taken at the ER after doc reattached it.
