Ever skip a class for the entire semester in college and still pull a 4.0?

Did you feel slightly guilty for it?

Figured the prof probably hates the fact that I skip, but if I can still do really well on his assignments, midterm and exam then he isn't really teaching anything besides the textbook verbatim.

Nope. State law requires that all classes fail you after a certain number of absences.

Jesus, what is this--kindergarten?

Your college takes ATTENDANCE?!

Is this typical of all American schools, or just those in your state?

Sounds like a really stupid way to legislate the fact that some profs suck **** but they want to pretend that you need them and that they make a difference :p

I did. My BIOL 110 class at USC was terrible. Class size was about 600 students; the instructor was replaced 6 lectures into the term with another lecturer who had such a thick accent that I simply could not understand what the hell was being said. So I started skipping the class and used the time to study my books on my own terms. My roommate kept me informed with test dates and changes, as he shared the class with me. I think I ended up with a 97 or something, and I only ever went to 6 lectures plus 3 tests and a final... so 10 show-ups out of... 51? Nice.

i've never heard of such a state law (in maryland or other states in which friends attend school). either way, no, it's not typical.

I think it's just certain states. I've never gone to college in a state other than Mississippi. Of course, we're not known for our educational system. For non-college schools, most states define an A as 90-100. In Mississippi it's 95-100.

Yeah I went to a MD state university and the attendance policies were determined by the individual professors.

I got a 4.0 in my Cisco class which I only attended for tests.

Edit: No, I was not certified at the time :)

As an undergrad, there was a class or two that I skipped almost the entire semester for. Got A's. But in grad school, attendence was required. Nevermind the fact that you couldn't really get away with that unless you had a friend that would share notes with you.

If I skipped an entire semester of classes and got an A, I'd feel stupid for not taking the CLEP test and saving myself money and effort. :)

I had a programming class where I skipped every lab once I found out they didn't care about attendance. I just did the labs on my own, I never needed help from the TA anyway. Then they had one lab that actually had to be done in the computer lab during the lab session. Whoops.

What are class averages where you guys are getting 4.0?

Here the class average is typically about 68-70% which is like a 2.76... (Professors need to submit a class grade in that range (+/- 3%) or they will be 'investigated'.

I don't go to Linear Algebra. It's not that I already know the material, it's just the professor and I do not click. Some like him and some don't. Luckily for me he doesn't take attendance, so I just show up for tests. ATM I have an A.

Nope. Skipped a Dynamics course the whole semester during my 'learning' (i.e. failing) semester and pulled a 4.0 divided by 10 multiplied by 0 (almost).

Woops. Edit: implication of above is that class screwed my grade. Correction, not giving a ******, being extremely jaded and more not giving resulted in not doing the work and keeping up, which obviously led to skipping and near bombing (worse than I did).

well, it doesn't necessarily matter if it is a law or not. My professors would do quizzes if many people were MIA. Needless to say, we had class 3 times a week...MWF...and friday was 9 times out of 10 a quiz :(

oh, to answer the question...I have skipped all but 2-3 classes in a semester and pulled an A. Better yet, i have taken the 3rd highest dropout class at Purdue and got a B in it after not showing up for more than half the semester. I had a roomate get a B in a course that he skipped the 2nd of 4 exams. Needless to say, he aced pretty much everything else :)

Classes that ended with a certification could be skipped completely so long as you passed the cert test at the end.

No, but I've skipped 2-3 classes for entire semesters (other than the first day and exams) and gotten 2.3s. :p

I skipped all of my classes (except for the first and last classes) for an entire year and still got a B average. It was worth it. 24 credit hours for the year with a 3.0 average (hurt my overall gpa, but at that time I didn't care).

This is when I was studying at Uppsala University in Sweden. I was an anomaly in being able to pull it off.
