Ever sharpen a pencil from both ends?

It's amazing what a good power supply will do with the leads clamped onto the pencil "lead" on both ends.

Burst into flames in a few seconds, crackling and sparking like mad.

Boy does it stink! Whew! Almost as bad as the rubber at the drag strip! :D

45A?

That would vaporize the graphite far too quickly, methinks.

You can get some pretty nice glowage with far less amperage.

You could probably make a pretty bright carbon arc lamp with 45A, though... although it's difficult to maintain the arc since it uses the graphite in the process.

Well that's the lowest the dial goes. Didn't use an ammeter to see what the drawl was now. The box is used for cranking marine engines. It's basically a welder's buzz box with a little better rectification. Hey carbon arc! Crank it up to 200A and get some carbon rods out of some old D cells! That will blind ya!

Now I have to get my hands dirty. :p -M

My brother and I did that with 120VAC about 40 years ago. We hung the appliance cord, with pencil attached, out a window and closed it just in case. When it was plugged in, the pencil vaporized! Next came the electronic componets from old radios, including the speakers. Good times... :)

Wow that's hilarious. Did you have a penny in the fusebox? We tried 120VAC and the CB opened instantly. (20 AMP Square D QO) -M

Believe it or not, we had one of those new-fangled breaker boxes, and the house was built by my dad during the early sixties. The wire we used to clip onto the components was not too heavy, so it would have burned up before reaching 20 Amps.

That was nothing compared to the chemicals we burned in our friend's fireplace. We tried to make gunpowder, but failed. The sulfur and potassium burned like a mofo, though!
