Ever see ZZ Top in concert?

I realize their are a lot of "older" folk on here and was curious, anyone ever seen them? I just bought some tickets to see these guys before they croak. Music just isn't the same as it used too be, sad... considering I find myself listening to music from my parents generations....

Anyone seen them? How does their live performance compare acoustically to their professionally recorded tracks?

Acoustically, they're quite good live. Nobody sounds as good live as they do in the studio and ZZ Top is no exception, but they're competent musicians and since they only play three chords there isn't much to go wrong. The two times I saw them they were very "up", played with a lot of energy, not just going through the motions. Don't expect much of a show though. They go out and play and not much else. There isn't a lot of staging, lasers, pyrotechnics or Jagger-like movement. Maybe that's why they sound pretty good. Or maybe because they know they sound pretty good they don't have to try to distract the audience with smoke and mirrors.

I saw them back in the 80s, and it was what it was. It sounded like the record played on stage. I don't like that when I see a concert. If I want to hear the same music louder, I'll just turn the volume up on my stereo. I want to hear live music changed up, and stretched out. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, but at least it isn't the same thing I've heard 100 times before.

Thanks, sounds good to me the tickets are not outrageously priced anyways so its not like they'd have the financial backing to do a elaborate setup. I am just making sure that musically they live up to their album stuff.

Referencing your comment about how "Nobody" sounds as good live as they do in the studio, while that is true for most... I must say I saw Amy Lee from Evanescence back in 2003/2004 and her voice was utterly amazing, sounded like she was lip syncing her CD playing over the speakers but she clearly wasn't b/c she would pause mid song and comment to the crowd. Also about two years ago I saw "Gin Blossoms" and those guys were also amazing...

I saw them in the 80's as well. Had pretty good seats, and they were loud as hell. They were good but it didn't stand out as one of my favorite concerts. It was too loud to enjoy. I've been to a lot of shows and it doesn't have to be that way. Louder is not better.

Thanks for your comment, Their coming to the state fair so I figured I could buy the tickets and experience a day at the fair and the concert that night, I am not expecting the show of the century but just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be super disappointing. Tickets are reasonable - 2 for $50.

Oh I agree completely with that, I have seen some shows that just maxed out the configurations and it sounded HORRIBLE! I hate that 🙁

Louder != Better

Unless they've regressed, it should be a great show for $25, especially since there's other stuff to do. I wouldn't go to an arena specifically to see them, but I'd certainly pay extra at a fair to see them in addition to the other attractions.

I saw them back in the 80's when I lived in Texas, they were very good. Live never sounds the same as the recorded version, but they did a good job with it. Not a whole lot of hoopla, but certainly entertaining, well worth it.

Back then there were a LOT of hot groupies and fans around, not sure how that's going to be now, considering it's 20+ years later. Those hotties that were 25 then are closer to 50 now 😉

Not an old fart yet but I saw them twice in 2010 and both times they were excellent.

The second time that year they took over as Petty's opener. Was suppose to Joe Cocker but he had to bow out for some reason.

I saw them on their Afterburner tour (1986-ish). But like everyone else said, it wasn't a bad show, but definitely not a memorable one.

yes. 1973. I don't remember too much of the concert...must have been all the funny smelling smoke in the room.......😛

Saw them a couple of years ago put on quite a good show. Not the best I've ever seen but worth the 8 bucks for admission .

Yes, in 1981 at a rock "Superbowl" in Orlando FL although I take the word "Superbowl" lightly as the Archies were not present. Temps were around 96-99, staff were spraying people with hoses to try and keep the heat-stroke victims down, I was so high I thought he was a god...

Yeah. I saw them in the mid 70's and again in the 80's when they had gotten really big.

Wow. I saw Joe Cocker 44 years ago (2 weeks before Woodstock in 1969), and I pegged him then for a drug overdose death within 3 years, max. 😱

Saw them in '85 on the Afterburner tour. It was them and a big car dashboard as a prop. If I recall correctly, and as much as I was smoking back then it may be a reach, they were one of the first bands to use lasers extensively in thair shows. Anyway, the show was okay, greatest hits type stuff, nothing that exciting.

Peace

I seem to recall that ZZ Top used to include some wild animals, such as deer or elk or something, live onstage during their music shows.
Does anyone remember seeing something like that?

I've seen them a few times. They put on a fantastic show, and the music always comes first. You'll leave the show wanting to go home and pick up a guitar 🙂
