does it really matter? there isn't a single shelter anywhere near my house and if a nuclear war begins, we're all going to die anyway so what's the point? assuming a nuclear war started in the middle east, i imagine Iran would start it and we would annihilate the rest. israel does have very advanced nuclear weapons...

Maybe if they were soft-core porn stars.

Someplace out there on the internet is a collection of those movies kids watched in the 50's and 60's in school. Among them, a film that shows the "modern" military training for battle on the nuclear battlefield. A nuke is detonated and the soldiers stay ducked below the top of the trench. Later, they show the soldiers being brushed off with little whisk brooms because "radioactive fall-out is dangerous, so it must be brushed off."

I watched these videos just a couple years ago. I've forgotten the address of the archive site. If anyone finds the archive site, PM me!

Let's not forget the anti-radiation School Desks

If there's a nuclear war, I'm going to go outside and watch the show.

I just plan on running around naked screaming. You know, try to help calm people down and such.

This might be the archive you speak of.

It really does not matter what you do. If you are so close to the blast that you need to be far underground, then you need to build an entire city because you will never be able to venture out again. If you are on the outskirts then you do not need a major shelter and just need to have a couple decades worth of supplies and a fortress to defend them.

No, you would just have to wait until the radioactivity decays to levels that would let you escape the area without taking a lethal/debilitating dose. This would probably happen within a few weeks to a couple months depending on the location and circumstances.

I just picked up some Rad-X and Rad-Away from the Hub, so I'm all set for my trip to The Glow.

If you want some real training in post-nuclear survival, GoGamer has a Fallout 1, 2 & Tactics bundle right now for $14.90.

Do they run well in XP? I miss Dogmeat.

I remember the "duck and cover" drills in school when I was a kid...we had to watch the cheesy movies as well...like hiding under your desk will really make any difference in a nuk-u-lur attack...but, the guvmint had to calm the sheep somehow during the early years of the cold war, so they told everyone that simple tricks like that and back yard bomb shelters would make life sustainable...then they built Cheyenne Mountain for themselves...

I'm playing through Fallout now in XP, works great. Just got back from The Glow and have joined the Brotherhood of Steel. Power Armor at last!

Once in a while there is a screen repaint glitch where it all goes black, until your mouse trail repaints it, but that's probably because it was written for DirectX _5_. Also you still need to remember to exit out every couple of hours because the game leaks memory and/or resources.

Bonus: FO-1 runs without even a startup CD check if you do the full install (around 700MB).

I used to be the News Director for a farm of three radio stations. One day the owner's wife asked me what I would do in case of a nuclear attack. I assumed that she meant on Indianapolis, which was about 75 miles away. I told her that assuming we had power, I would tell people to get to the nearest shelter.

She wanted to know what I would do if the missile actually hit the station, since "they" would want to take out points of communication first. I told her that I would die in a giant fireball along with everyone in our listening area. I

In order to help out incase of a nuclear attack, she bought us 64 oz of apple juice and two packs of tuna fish...

Of course, she also had us lock the doors after 9/11, since terrorists would want to broadcast propaganda from the station. I told her that if a group of terrorists wanted the station, they could have it. ;)
