I just got into bicycle riding and was thinking of trying a race. I'm sure I'll get smoked my first time out and as long as I was competitive eventually it would be fun. What advice do you have for me? It would be a road race. I enjoy staying in shape and competing. I had to hang up the basketball sneakers. It's a little too dangerous for me. I f*cked my ankle up pretty good not long ago and it opened my eyes up. I was thinking what if I broke it who would pay the bills? Well thats why the switch to bikes. Also how do you train? Thanks.

You might do better if instead of racing the bicycle, you race the other rider.

I disagree, he is more likely to beat a bicycle in a race than a rider.

1. Get a decent low end racing bike (used Specialized Allez, Trek 2.3, Cannondale Synapse)
2. Get in decent shape.
3. Do group rides and try to keep up with the Cat 4/5 guys that are training
4. Once you can keep up, get a UCI license, do a bunch of crits.
5. Decide if racing is for you (you have probably spent over a grand by now).
