Ever Paid $40.00 To Have Your Remote Keyless Entry Reprogrammed?

Ornery

Lifer
Did you know that if you take the battery out of your car, the remote keyless entry code gets dumped? Well, it did for my car! I never heard of such a thing! :disgust:

I looked online for instructions on how to reprogram it. Found an easy solution for 1997 and newer, but not mine. I called two dealers to see how much they wanted to do this. $40.00! SOB! Crooks! :|

I was this close to buying a replacement remote, which would include instructions on how to program it. I figured the cost would be about the same, but I'd have instructions for the future AND a new remote. Just when I was about to give up, I found a TSB at V8SHO.com that had the info I needed. The procedure took less than two minutes. The fvcking dealers wanted $40.00! Damn, that pisses me off! :|

I had my battery die on me, had it replaced, and my keyless entry works fine for me.

Even if your battery is totally "dead" to the point of not turning your engine over, there's still enough juice left in it to keep the little things going.

It takes a lot of power to turn some engines over.

Dealer wanted $25 to get rid of the "change oil light" on my dads 94 Roadmaster... his bud from a garage just did it for him in exactly 5 seconds.. and 2 of those seconds were used to get into the car 😛

A guy that works at AutoZone told me this is common knowledge. There's a 12V device that can be plugged into the cigarette lighter to keep voltage to the computer while the battery is swapped out. If you had a garage install the battery, they may have done that. Live and learn...

I guess they have to make money somehow, though.

This sucks bad. How can they pull that crap? These maggots are worse than lawyers!

Why are you calling the dealers crooks? They need money like the rest of us. and they sure aren't doing anything illegal.

Did you try taking it back to where you had the RS installed? My shop does it for free for people that got starters there. It takes five minutes.

i don't know. i charge more than that sometimes.

shoot my clients pay me thousands of dollars to install and support software. i call it systems integration but it isn't anything that takes a rocket scientist.

most people in service are basically charging for knowledge they have that you don't.

I would NEVER, EVER, EVER conduct business like that! Fvcking crooks! :|

Please ... why do you think some professions (doctors, lawyers, engrs. ) get paid so much, it's for their knowledge. Another example in the tech. industry are contractors, they charge insane amount of money just to come in, look at the system and tell you, you need to send it in for repair ... took 'em 5mins to look at the system but they charged us over 2k for coming in ...drive was only like 20mins ...

My sarcasm meter isn't working on this post....

hmm

I have keyless entry on our Maxima, and the battery has died a few times, yet the keyless still works.

And ours can roll down the front windows and open the trunk as well! With just a touch of a button! How far technology has come! Rolling down the windows before you get to the car!

The chip in the key works even after hte battery has been replaced too (without that particular key the car won't start cause that programmed chip won't be there).

Wats really cool is the intelligent key in the FX45 and M-Bs. If you have the "key" anywhere near your (pockets, etc..) and approach the car, it will only unlock the doors on your side of the car! How neat is that! So if your on the drivers side of hte car, only that side of doors will be unlocked!

what do you do for a living?

Before I spent the last 25 years as a CNC machinist, I was a self employed carpenter. I was always up front about material and labor costs. I'd NEVER screw people like that, and I mean it.

It's bad enough you have to pay over $60.00 per hour labor costs at a dealer. Tons of overhead to cover... fine. But to charge $40.00 for that is sick. I ought to have them quote the job. Put down the estimated time for the job, cost per hour etc. I hear there's a book they use to determine how many hours each task should require. I'd love to see the quote from that book. Hell, I ought to do that, and I think I will!

Remeber, it's not the mechanic at the dealership, it's the scumbag owner of the place. He's living it up and wants more of our money.
Greed really is the downfall of our society. People care sooo much about wealth and being richer than the next guy. I mean does a person with $500Mil in the bank and multiple yahats and cars and houses need more? Of course, cut the work force, higher people in at cheaper pay, and make more money.
There are sometimes that i see that a Socialist society is truely the best way to go. It cares for it's people, All of them, not just the rich, like a Capitalist society, which the USA is.

I washed and dried my keyfob once. Thought it was shot so I paid $60 for a new one.
A few days later just for kicks I reassembled it and it worked. Oh well.

Honda used to be notorious for overcharging for keyless entry. The Civic LX had the keyless entry built into the radio, all you needed were the key fobs. The dealer wanted over $200 for the Keyless Entry option. I bought two brand new key fobs off the internet and programmed them myself for about $50.

What is even more ridiculous are the new keys some manufacturers have that cost $70+ for a copy. My Volvo key only costs about $35 for a copy, but newer models range in the $70+ range because of security in the key.

When I programmed mine, I took my wife's out there to program it too. It didn't work! I took it inside and pulled it apart. The batteries were upside down. Turned 'em over, put it back together and it programmed right in. Needless to say, I bought this car used, and my wife never used her keys for it.

I don't mind paying for someone's knowledge or labor. A plumber could fix things in five minutes, that would take a home owner all day to figure out. He deserves to be paid for his expertise. The dealer has to buy test equipment that costs a fortune, I understand that. But this is NOT a "problem" that should be used to stick it to the customer. This info should be included in the damn owner's manual or something, for crying out loud!
