When I've been on the top of the world, I have lots of friends. They call me, come over, offer to have me for dinner, etc.

Suddenly, when you lose a business, go broke, or get laid off, nobody is around anymore. I'm coming to the conclusion that most people are phony.

Maybe they figure, if it was bad luck for me, it might mean bad luck for them too.

Tell me about it. It's when times get bad you really come to realise who your real friends are. I always tell myself that I don't really need a lot of friends, a few real ones are what I really need and that's good enough.

Some people, like my sister, have over 100 people on their MSN list. And my cousin brags about the same thing. Umm, good for you??

Hey, some of us are late bloomers, ok? I must have bloomed about 30 years past you.
I've gained and lost more than many will realize in a lifetime, but life has no room for has beens. zero is always a start, as it's a number which can always be improved. :)

I dunno, but it could be the company you keep.
Maybe you always just kept phony friends and never realized it? I've never really had this problem with my friends, and I've never left my friends hanging from high school drop out to crack head, I am there for them.

edit: I guess its not totally true, because if my friends got involved in anything illegal I'll be the first to drop off the face of the earth, but in terms of life's ups and downs, I'm there.

Well, when you live in NorCal, and are a transplant from Hooterville, Wa, there hasn't been much time to make serious relationships. California moves too fast for that stuff, anyway. We're all too busy trying to run each other off the freeway, or see who has the biggest SUV, or the best Soccer kid, around here. I hate it here, but it has a grip. You can't afford to live in it, and you can't afford to get out.

My buddy got beat up pretty bad by some gang that crashed their party. Some of our friends were there to see it and stood and watched as they kicked him in the face, doing nothing. Not many of us still hang out with that group of "friends".

Choose better friends?

My freinds are all betting on when I'll crap out and head back to Alaska. The ones that miss me the most are betting the shortest time. (awww) I'm happy that they cared enough to start a pool.

Either way, I have a job. My former employer would take me back in a heart beat.

Man you must be having a REALLY hard time. I'm broke myself, but you seem even more broke, especially with all these transparent threads

My friends are never there when I need help, but my family is always by my side.

Most people have a hard time dealing with their own "bad times".
So when a friend is going through a rough patch, they tend to pull back for lack of a "fix" for the situation.

People are better at helping with a divorce or death rather than an economic situation.
With a divorce or death there is a finality, while economic troubles don't have a clearly defined end.

well it can be because of 2 reasons:

1) they are not really your friends
2) they feel bad and think it'd be awkward to hang out with you when you're down... personally i'm not too great at dealing with people who are in a rut.

or they're just busy. either way, for me i tend to rebound on my own.

Live long enough, and you will. The business world is very clique oriented.

Sorry about this post. Most of you guys are too young to understand. This coming from a 40 something business man, who has been up the ladder, and back down, at least a couple times. ;) On the up side, you're like a magnet. On the downside, you're like a garden ho...nobody wants to get stuck. :)

I will have to ask them about that, I will be right back; they are right here buried in my backyard.

I have found life's bumps in the road show you who your real friends are.

Pick your friends like you are packing a bag to go camping.

Sure, it'd be great to stuff all sorts of crap in there and make sure everything you can think of is in there, but when you're walking through the woods you're the one carrying it.

This is not to say that you can't have all the stuff you want, it's more to say that you should know what is important to you and know what you need so that when you start walking on life's journey's you don't break your back bringing it all along and you don't have to sift through all of it in the middle of a path to find what you need.

Don't break your back for people who wouldn't help you in any way. Don't let these people take the place of something you need, and don't let them stand in the way of the people you need.

It's a sucky reality to know that of all the people that you care about only a small portion will be there for you, but those are the ones worth breaking your back for.

Sounds like you don't have real friends.

My best friends would practically take a bullet for me and vice versa.

That's the opposite for me...When I'm in deep crap, my friends are twice as willing to hang around.
