I bought a couple of those socket-plugin battery chargers last year Xmas, for my in-laws in Wyoming. They've successfully used them a couple times now. I intend on getting one for myself.

But I've jumped plenty of other peoples' cars...family and strangers.

I've never needed a jump but have given jumps to others. I have AAA if I needed one. The insurance discount for being a AAA member pays for the membership.

Both given and needed.

When I needed them in the last town I lived, I just called a shop my friend ran. The one time I needed it on a highway I was near an uncle's town and called him.

I've mostly only done jumps for family. The one stranger I can remember was a guy in the parking lot at my last job - turned out that he'd been there for an interview and they made him an offer, but he was considering turning it down for somewhere else. He said me stopping to help him changed his mind.

Did you pick it up by the rear bumper and lift it 45 degress so it would think it's being towed and shut itself off?

I carry jumper cables, tow strap, tire plugs, fix a flat and tools in my truck. I have two batteries (diesel) so it's unlikely I'll ever need a jump.

My brother had to do that for a while with his last car. Our uncle looked at it and said "I can either bill you $500 worth of parts and labor, or you can connect these two points with a wire."

last winter. called AAA and a guy came out to give me a jump... it was actually right in my driveway, but none of my neighbors were around.
