Ever lost a vehicle title? How do you fix it?

I bought a car from my father-in-law two years ago, he signed the title over and between my wife and myself and all the crap that was going on around that time, we lost the title and never transferred it.

I'm finally trying to take care of it and I think the only way to do this is have a duplicate title issued in my father-in-law's name and then have him sign it over to me again.

The problem is the vehicle insurance isn't under his name, and I doubt he kep the original lienholder info.

What happens if you buy a car from someone, lose the title and need to have it replaced and you don't have any contact with the seller?

Is there a way to get a title?

Do I need a lawyer to sort this out for me?

Call you local DMV. They'll be able to answer all your questions.

Have the title reissued to him. Here in MI, they can print off a new one on the spot at a lot of Secretary of State branches.

Did that, they gave me the form to file for a duplicate title, but I didn't realize at the time it required the "lienholder" and insurance information.

I'll go back there if there's no other way, but as I'm sure you're aware it's not the fastest organization in the world.

You fix it by ordering new title =)

Call your DMV

Wait a minute, how the hell did you get license plates without having clear title?

there is no lien holder, you own this thing out-right. When I took my mom's car as a gift I didn't have to put in any info about lienholder, just everyones signatures + info re the car as a gift.

If I understand your story correctly, it sounds like the DMV was never notified that he sold you the car. That means that as far as they are concerned, he is the owner of the car. All you have to prove your ownership is the car keys, and you could have stolen them for all they know. I'm guessing they will tell you your father-in-law needs to get a replacement title and sign it over to you.
