No. In fact there comes a point where I start reminding them every time I see them. Some f%#$ers expect you to forget or something.

In my experience, friends who ask to borrow money won't be all that concerned about paying it back. I'm not talking about the occasional $5, but more substantial sums. I've also found that people can be perfectly fine with avoiding you forever if you are going to keep bugging them. Sometimes they'd rather sacrifice a friendship than pay you back.

In most cases they need the money because they don't know how to manage what they have, so they are somehow never in a position to pay you back.

Of the five or six friends I have lent substantial amounts to over the years (let's say $100 and up), the poorest one was the most diligent about paying it back. He knew how to manage money but had a temporary setback. The others were in need, but probably won't ever get out since they keep screwing themselves. Doesn't bother me since I was prepared never to see the money again.

In general it's a good idea not to lend money to friends if you care about getting it back.

Only lend money you don't need. Expect to not be repaid. PERIOD. One of hte first things my dad tought me. If you need that money and have trouble getting it back, you deserve to have money problems.

And yes, you should ask for hte money back.

I borrowed $2000 for a TV once from a room mate. 32" Sony XBR ... drool.

I said I'd have hte money back in 3 months time (based on salary/bills I knew I could do this).
Paid $1000 back in 2 months. The last payment was 2 weeks late though so I tossed in a couple extra bucks. Still friends passively. Don't hang out anymore, but usually talk for 5-10 minutes when we bump into eachother.

yep, i normally don't lend money to people and expect to get it back. that said, i will only lend it to my best friends because i know they will only ask if they are truly in a set-back. if they pay me back, then they do. no problem if they dont because i know that they will do the same for me should i be in that situation.

example of this, back in my freshman year in college, i was in a payment plan for my tuition. the payment was coming up soon, and i was short on cash. i had asked a friend to borrow the money, and the next day he did lend it to me. later, i found out that he had sold his pool stick (stick was his baby) to get the money to lend to me. i did pay him back, but he never got his pool stick back and took up bowling instead. :)

am i a dumbass for lending a sick friend money because he had no medical benefits to buy medication? he would of been covered by his job but they decided to lay him off after he requested for a benefits package. ( he worked for a privately owned cell phone company.)

well now that he is no longer sick, i guess i shouldnt feel so bad asking for it back.

I don't lend friends money.
If they truly -need- it, I'll try to manage to give it to them.

You just say, "Yo dude, you got that cash I lent you? What's up scammer? You going to give me that cash you POS?" Give him a couple little smacks in the chops just for funsies. If you can't joke around with your buddy about it or hint at it in some way, maybe you will get pwned and never get it back.

How about: "Got my money?"

Or the ever popular: "Can I have that money I lent you?"

Maybe even: "You don't have to pay me now, but I will need that money eventually."

Good luck and you can Paypal me half of it for the advice.

He went out of his way to lend money to you. I'd never do that.

I can't stand cheap people. It makes me real mad when someone says something like, "Hey, when are you going to pay me that $100 you owe me?" or "Do you have that $50 you borrowed?" Man, quit being so cheap!

Yes. I have many friends that are down on their luck, and even though I'm generous and they've promised to pay the money back.. I always have problems asking them for it.

yeah I hate asking for my money back, thats why I try not to "lend" money out. a few co-workers of my mine still owes me anywhere from $1-$4, they somehow just magically forget about owing people money, and I hate to hunt them down over that small amount of money. maybe I should go around collect them now, that should be enough for beer money for this weekend. ;)

I lend and borrow all the time. It really is relative to the strength of your friendship. I`d never bother asking for it back because there`s a reason that I let her/him borrow my money, I trust her/him. She/He`d pay back once she/he got the money.
