Ever just look up at the night sky...

And think to yourself about how most of the stars in the sky have planetary systems and that the planets may be capable of supporting life and we'll never know if they do or not? We don't even know if any of the other planets in our solar system have life yet. Pretty sad...humans are so small and insignificant. 🙁

I was going to get into astronomy as a hobby for a while, but the light polluted and often cloudy area where I live, combined with it being such an expensive hobby, made it impractical. I love just staring at the stars, its a great time waster.

Ever wonder what it'd be like to be at the edge of space, where it is expanding, and try to touch the boundary?

Not necesarily that, but just staring and wondering how space can really be that vast.

same, always wondering and trying to bend my mine around the distances, and what space is made of, and what it is expanding into, ect

there is no boundary

there is no boundary

so, what do you see if you are at the edge? what happens if you try to move through it? the universe is expanding.

An analogy.

Suppose you are an ant on a ball. How far do you have to go before you reach an edge where you cannot walk further?

Space is the same thing, but with one added dimension.

how do we actually know that the universe is expanding?

redshift data, and such?

Wouldn't that depend on the shape of the universe? If I had a spaceship, and I was flying toward the boundary, would I not reach it?

Uh oh. I sense this is about to become a 400-reply topic..

If it requires thought, it won't last long. Have no fear, OT is safe.

Whew, good thing. I almost thought I would have to nef in this thread.

Where is the boundry on a ball? It could be a cylinder, or any shape you can imagine. There is no boundry. You can walk around forever.

the expansion was discovered by Hubble
