[some girl]: who is this?
[acemcmac's alternate S/N]: my bad
[acemcmac's alternate S/N]: it's a long story
[acemcmac's alternate S/N]: you don't want me to get into it
[some girl]: ok then
[acemcmac's alternate S/N]: sorry to bother you
[some girl] signed off at 7:49:03 PM. I blocked her

non technical expl:

I am intercepting traffic fron the network (read: not mine) and IM'ing the screenames I'm finding in the AIM blocks. I have at least 4 different peoples' buddy lists and mabye 100 or so names outside of that....

it's my campuses network. Performance is so bad (25-33% packet loss on a good day) that it's damn near useless.... I would normally be on comcast, but I can't afford it right now. Network administration told me if I got a top talker's report for my segment that they'd ban the top 5 and see if that made things better

Anyhow, while skimming through the traffic, I've been picking up a lot of AIM stuff and I got nosy

Ethereal is free. There are better (but pirated) alternatives... but they are primarily better with their on the fly-filtering, sorting and traffic analysis parts.... but etheral will do the job for just capturing....

What university is this that still runs hubs instead of switches? With the price drops in switching devices, I am surprised anyone would not have replaced their hubs by now.

yeah...I had mentioned the name of some utils...much as you did...but my above statement stands as a smarter response than giving irresponsible people tools like that

Maybe they should just block P2P programs and newsgroups... or figure out who's using them and ban those people instead of having you do their job. :)

My school ran CAT5 into the rooms, then split half the wires off to phone lines and half to the data system. You couldn't get higher than about 10mbps or so, it was ridiculous. Hell, our school only had ONE T-1 for the entire residential part of campus, after I graduated they changed it to 3 bound together, I hear it's nice now :(

Need that program that will reconstruct the pictures it sees over network traffic. I think it was created to sniff Wifi.

I know these are HP switches, infact, the switches are less than a year old.. this building didnt even exist until november 04.... but for some reason, I can still gather a lot of network traffic...
