ever heard of this??

got two machines here with similar problems. on one, the modem locks up the phone line. the minute the line is plugged into the modem, the phone cannot be used. on the other, you can call out on the line, but you cannot receive incoming calls...the callers get a busy signal. btw, both modems surf the web just fine. i believe one of the mbds is a P4, not sure of the other one. both modems are redowls. the two machines are gateways. someone mentioned "reverse polarity" but i have never heard of this in reference to modems. any ideas??
 
I have an inexpensive way to find out if your line is wired correctly.
Radio Shack has a phone tester for less than $10 that will give you status
On your "house wiring".

Basically, what the person suggested was that the phone jack was wired wrong. The phones don't care, but the modem does. I could see that it would disrupt normal operation of the phone circuit.
