Ever hear of a psychiatrist who prescribed recreational drugs?

As someone who has suffered from anxiety/depression for some time and who is on medication this is a question that has occurred to me numerous times. The meds I am on definitely do help but I still drink and take off the shelf meds when I'm feeling particularly stressed. Yes not the smartest thing to do but it helps. But the differences between "beneficial" drugs and "recreational" drugs is largely down to the fact that one is legal and one is not. There is nothing inherently different about the two, both can kill and both can be used recreationally. Doctors routinely prescribe drugs for conditions they were not designed to treat, but for some widely recognized side benefit. Like prescribing a muscle relaxant as a sleep aid etc.. etc.. It would not be legal though for them to "prescribe" recreational drugs of course but I wouldn't be surprised if there are people out there who have.

Anyone ever hear of a psychiatrist recommending say pot for depression and anxiety? They wouldn't be able to out and out recommend it of course but more of a wink wink, nudge, nudge thing.

are you asking about recommendations or prescriptions? I know people that have gotten recommendations from a "doctor" that allows them to get a rx pot card for getting stuff from dispensaries.

Just don't forget to mention to them an accurate description of your alcohol intake. Exactly how many, what size and how often.

Under prop 215 doctors in California can recommend cannabis for all kinds of ailments.
Pain, nausea, headaches, back pain, etc...

I know a friend's dad that is a psychiatrist. During the 60's he prescribed LSD to some patients. AFAIK not legal now.

California? I was speaking more generally, any state / any country. Assuming the laws actually disallowed it.

Huh interesting. Nice to know. I can see even LSD and other hallucinogens having therapeutic uses but one would hope they were closely monitored by loved ones in a save environment while tripping.

yeah, california. if the law disallows it, i doubt any doctors worth going to will be recommending it.

I know of a doc recommending pot, but it's another thing to prescribe it (leaving aside marinol etc.).

Schedule I drugs can't be prescribed, they're approved only for experiments, not therapy.

I didn't actually mean prescribe. Recommending is what I meant.
