I have to go in and take a personality test for a job. I've never taken one and don't know what to think of it going in.

Yes. Needless to say I failed the test and was not offered a position. They did not like my extremely harsh stands on lateness and theft. Questions included how should an employee be dealt with if they are late twice in one week, what should be done if an employee steals $100, $5, and $1 in merchandise?

For all situations I said fire them.

They are mainly used to see how you would handle yourself in certain situations...like if you see a co-worker stealing or get into an argument with a co-worker. Nothing big. Just answer honestly (or at least how an honest person would) and it will be no big deal.

I had to take one once. No big deal. They just ask you questions about how you would deal with a certain situation, and give you options. They are used to determine how well you will fit in with the current structure of things as well as the other current personalities.

Good luck on the job.

If you are going in for a sales position, they will give you a personality test because certain personality types sell better than others.

Either way its no good lying, because the test is designed to be smarter than you. If you think you can BS your way through it, contradictions will show up. Just be honest.

I thought it was illegal to use personality tests as a basis for hiring? At least that is what they taught us in class.

Oh yes... I've had to take a personality test that was 100 questions! I think that they asked 25 questions 4 times with different wording to see how consistent my answers were. I also had to take a math/english competency test.

Apparently I passed because an hour after the interview they called to offer the job. I majored in mechanical engineering (4 year degree), and the position was a design engineer. I accepted it!

Don't worry about personality tests, but don't blow them off either. It is surprising what some companies hire for.

Yeah I had to take one for a position in a bank...A mere internship. The damn thing was harder than the SATs... They just kept bringing in more papers with questions...more scantrons to fill out... It just wasn't worth it, especially since I didn't get the job. So much for my personality.
