but totally screw you over?

From the beginning, he was saying how as long as you hand in the homeworks you will pass with flying colors

I've handed in every homework and we get them back in bunches. I got a pile back today and out of the max score of 10.. it ranged from 1 to 4.

On the exam scores, I got 90% of the problems right but he doesn't give much partial credit so I ended up with a 13/30. Both questions, I got most of the steps right including the partial derivatives but missed one point.
I stopped by his office a few weeks ago because my exam 1 score wasn't good and he said not to worry about it and that I will do fine.

I just wish he would be straight up with me so that I can drop the class and not get screwed at the end instead of stringing me along with false hopes

No but Ive had a professor say half the class will get As and Bs, and the other half would get Ds and Fs.

Got the first test back

70-100 = A
59-69 = B
47-58 = C
35-46 = D
0-34 = F

High grade 81
Low grade 16
Mean 51
Median 50
6 As, 16 Bs, 15 Cs, 13 Ds, 10 Fs

<---- got a 61 which was a B. Only 15 out of 59 people did better than me.

Ask students from previous classes of his how the grading went. I once took an advanced accounting course that I barely pulled a 'C' in 71% and by the end of the curve I had an 'A.'

Usually when they say that they DID go easy on the grading. Did you bother checking your homeworks against the solutions? A professor can grade easy and still give you a bad score if you totally screwed the pooch on the assignment.

I'm a very easy grader, but I still have to give out 0s and 1s (out of 10) sometimes because the student just did such a crappy job.

Also, your opinion of "90% right" probably doesn't match his. He probably saw your work on the exams, thought you didn't know what you were doing or where you wanted to go, and thus reduced your score. It happens all the time.

He's probably curving the class, so when he told you you'll do fine that means you'll at least pass the class with the curve. I don't see what's so vague about that. "You'll do fine" as in you'll do alright, you won't get an A but you'll do fine.

Always, ALWAYS check a professors grade distribution before you enroll in their class. Most are required to disclose this information due to accredidation.

I took an Intermediate Economic Theory class, I dropped it, so did 24 other people. Over half of the remaining students failed.

Retaking the class this summer with a different prof. Last summer her grade distribution was like this, 22 As, 19 Bs, 15 Cs, 3 Ds and 3 Fs. Its partly grade inflation, but most of it is she is a better teacher(I have her for a different class this semester). I had a grad student teaching the previous class. He confused himself several times and I had enough of knowing less coming out of class than going in.

Some teachers do major curves at the end.

Yeah he's probably planning to curve it at the end. Any idea how your fellow students are doing, because that will determine your final grade. If you're doing as good or better than most of the class, you should expect at least a C.

You're right except when the class is taught by the head of the department then, he can do whatever the hell he wants.

how does 90% right come out to 13/30, partial credit aside? Was the 90% right only 90% of each question right vs overall?

I am taking it the rest of the class is doing just fine.

No, but I did have one that said all the tests were multiple choice. Problem was all the answers were right. It was made so that one was just a little more right than the rest. I don't know if I ever took harder exams.
