Ever had any issues with LAN controllers + Ubuntu?

I usually test new builds with an Ubuntu or Kubuntu disc. This time I couldn't get the LAN controller to work. No activity light on motherboard connector. No DHCP when booting. I have returned the motherboard for an exchange. I suppose I should have posted first, but it really seems like the LAN controller circuits weren't working.

This is the motherboard. Inexpensive build for a relative:

Don't see any complaints in the User Reviews.

Anyone think I sent back a perfectly good board, and of so what did I miss?

Thanks,

John

I had a similar issue with my PCI Lan card, unfortunately my solution envolved manually adding the device ID for the PCI port to a list of boot devices, not really relevant for onboard Lan... soz.

I know that board has Realtek chipset, but I don't recall which one. I'm assuming you made sure the network port wasn't disabled in the BIOS setup?

If so, you likely had a bad board and made the right call. Foxconn makes some pretty decent products (they do a lot of OEM iPhone stuff for Apple as well), but sometimes their QC has been known to be hit and miss. I once had to return two straight X48-based BlackOps boards (with Broadcomm LAN) before I finally gave up and bought an ASUS. The BlackOps boards had a reputation for good performance, but I decided it wasn't worth the effort after the 2nd return to try again.

It wasn't disabled in the BIOS. I guess it was defective after all. We'll see how the replacement does. Should be here tomorrow or Monday. Had a spare E5300 and needed a board for it. User reviews and price were good, so I bought it.

Thanks for the input.

John

Follow-up:

I installed the replacement motherboard and the same thing happened. No internet connection in Ubuntu / Kubuntu with the onboard LAN.

I installed a PCI Net card and it worked perfectly.

Any ideas? Does an actual operating system have to be installed first for this to work possibly?

John

EDIT: I have posted this over in the motherboards forum. Thank you for all the help. I really appreciate the suggestions

try enabling and disabling via network applet. I have the same issues on a couple boards, does it in windows too.

Only One of the two lights on the network port on back of the computer is all that lights. The other one does not light. No activity. Where is the via network applet in Ubuntu and Kubuntu?

Thanks,

John

EDIT: Problem solved: Downloaded the latest Ubuntu "Live" CD and the included drivers worked perfectly. I am typing this on it right now. Thanks for everything.

John
