Ever had an email delay?

So. I am sitting browsing the net, I see a (1) pop up in my Gmail tab, So i switch and look for the mail... it is not at the top. My eye scans down, and it is sitting about 10 emails down.

The funny thing is, right now it is 10:12, the email was from 8:17 this morning! This has happened two times so far this morning. Very strange...
 
Happens all the time at work because our email administrator can't seem to keep on top of the system. I just received an email from Tuesday 🙁
 
I don't understand why people are so surprised by this... no, it's not a good thing, but e-mail delivery should *never* be expected, particular in a timely manner.

Yeah, but I have never not had it come within seconds of it being sent. I don't expect it persay, but it is vital in some cases. For instance if i am bidding on something and I don't get the outbid notice until after the auction ends. That just screwed me over. I am surprised, because I have never had it happen to me before.
 
Email = slow communication. I can't understand why people keep insisting that it is fast. If you need fast communication, call the person. A real phone conversation is as fast as you can possibly get.

My emails are routinely 8-12 hours delayed. Sometimes they are 2-3 days delayed. Only rarely will I get an email someone send in <5 minutes. And this is with multiple different types of emails, email adresses, and IP providers.

You should watch the auction, rather than relying on e-mail. 😛

Seriously... e-mail is *not* as reliable as everyone thinks it is. That is, at least, as regarding the internet in general.
 
I manage our company's E-mail server, and the problems can be caused by a number of sources.

Usually it's DNS problems causing the delays because large ISPs are increasingly leasing over-head, and mail sits in spoolers waiting until the MX records synch and point to some place that actually exists.

A far bigger problem is over-zealous RBL black listing. In an attempt to combat spam, some ISP suscribe to lists containing addresses of known spammers. Problem is, that spammer might be somebody on the name sub-net as you, and hence your mail gets blockes as well.
