Almost told a woman off through text after she agreed to hold the item for me but sold it to someone else.

I've been burned by this enough times to know that the first person to get money in my hands is the person who gets the item - I can't pay my bills with dibs.

True story

The lady should have at least not lead him on though if that's how she felt.

Shrug, in case she didn't get any other buyers by the time he came through and she didn't want to lose the guaranteed sale. Now if he said "please hold it, I am on the way to pay for it" and she agreed, then sold it to someone else that would be seriously fucked up.

All of these.

She agreed to hold it til this weekend. I told her I can send half in paypal or any payment system she prefers to hold it exclusively for me. She said that won't be necessary and it's mine as long as I keep my word. Some other person comes along afterwards and says hey I'll give an extra 50 and pick it up tomorrow. I ask her to let me come tomorrow and do the half in person but she won't even allow me that opportunity. So she sold herself for $50 (this is a $1000+ item).

Did you offer to match or beat the price, especially since she was holding it for you? If not $50 is $50.

Okay you almost did it over text, for something that you barely, if at all, have a right to be angered over.

In person craigslist arguments almost always end in gun violence. So, be careful.

I never argued with a hooker either, but I hear stories about getting killed on craigs list all the time.

I was selling an old Onkyo A/V receiver for $100 FIRM. Guy is interested, we exchange a few texts, reiterating that it's $100 FIRM. We arrange to meet in a parking lot of a local store on Sat morning, I tell him be sure to bring $100 cash. Not $50, not $80…..$100 FIRM.

He shows up, the receiver is in my trunk. He says "Let me look at it first". I pop my trunk, he starts looking at it, then starts hemming and hawing "Well, there's a little scratch here, and a little scratch there…..I can only really give you like $80 for it…"

I say "lemme see…", take the receiver out of his hands…..place it gently in my trunk, and slam the trunk lid. Walk to my drivers door, enter, lock doors, and briskly drive off. I can see him trying to wave me down. I get a text 2 minutes later "I'll give you the full $100"……I never even responded.

Not Craiglist, but OfferUp.

Wanted to sell a NIB Epson workforce 1100 last year for $200, since it just taking space. Worth about >$400 that time (Amazon, eBay..)
No offers for a few days, lower it to $180 FIRM. local pickup, cash only, no returns. This person emails me offering $150 and wanting me to drive 25 miles up north to deliver it.
Responded,, you gotta be kidding.. read the f*king ad. I let him know if he is interested, that he has to drive to my location, I already lowered the price. Days later, we meet outside a parking lot
of a restaurant 2 blocks from my placer and all he has are $20 bills. Told him, $150 FIRM and I have no change for the $160 he hands to me. I leave and told him enjoy your new printer.
No comment from him.

I haven't sold anything since. Never had a problem buying from people via Craigslist and Anandtech FS/Trade.

Since this is still going I thought I'd update.

After thinking it was sold or atleast being held for someone else, it was offered back to me. If I didn't want it so much I'll tell her to go pound sand but I caved. Had some minor setbacks with my plan but overall it went well.

I know in the end you were able to get it, but honestly, within the realm of CL, it's not unreasonable for her to pull what she did. In fact, it's almost laughable to think someone would be willing to hold an item for you for days and decline another buyer that's willing to pay more right away.

Sorry, but I don't think you have any grounds for being mad here. Again, this is all in the context of CL.

LOL all I can think of is The Office episode where Dwight tries to get revenge on that mall store only to end up buying what he wanted from them.

This happened when I was in college fixing/selling computers on the side back in 04,05.

This chinese guy wanted to buy my laptop that I listed on craigslist. I used to post tons of pictures and full detailed description and ask for a firm price, I spoke to him and told him that the price is firm, so we meet up at a local mall, and he started to ask questions and go back and forth and making phone calls and waste my time. Then he asks: what is the real price man? with a WTF face I tell him that the price is firm, he ask me to lower the price and keeps asking more stupid questions even though ALL the info was in the listing, I grabbed my laptop and left. Next week I sold it to a nice gentleman who checked the condition of the laptop and it took him 5 minutes to hand me the $$.

My roomate at the time had an old flat screen 29" sharp TV, one with a giant ass and weighed a ton. A Vietnamese guy called and said that he wanted to buy it, again I tell him the price is firm, (I asked for $200 which was high but what the he**). and he could look at the listing for any info before he meets me. He showed up and I had the tv hooked up to a dvd player for him to check the video and audio output. Then he asked me to lower the price, I told him it was firm. He wanted to pay like 40% of the asking price, the tv was old tech. So again I tell him the price is firm and whether he wanted to buy it or just leave.

He accepted paying the asking price, asked me to help him carry the heavy beast down the stairs which I did. I helped him put the thing is his car and then he tells me that the TV is worthless and he hated it, but his girlfriend asked him to go buy it and that's why he is buying it, I LOLed

One of the reasons that I rarely sell on Craigslist. Also, stereotype the shit out of people. If they can't write a competent email, you can likely assert that they are going to be a dipshit and try to lowball you.

I had better luck selling cars on eBay too. Only thing I might ever try to sell on CL is something bulk for the purpose of selling local like furniture. Otherwise, screw it - I'll donate it to Goodwill and call it a day. I don't need to fight for $20.

Craiglists back then was the best option for a broke college student like myself to get cash, no fees, no scam disputes, refunds..etc

A couple of years ago I sold a used note 4 to a guy who just moved from Africa, he could barely speak English but the transaction went smoothly in a local burger joint.
