i'm currently taking a Strategic Management course with one of the toughest professor I've ever had. This professor is really arrogant and strict but he's very successful and has written over 10 books and I don't think he's even 50 years old yet. The problem is I dunno if I can pass him because you have to be really articulate in order to do well in the case analysis assignments. He'll randomly select a person to go up infront of class and explain a certain part of a business case to initiate further discussions. The sad thing is many other students in this class does not want to be in there as well but we have no choice because he's the only option left. So anyone ever been in this type of situation? what did you do?

Here are some of the comments from ratemyprofessor.com:

"DO NOT, i repeat... DO NOT take this class w/ Dr A.. if you don't ask millions of questions about homework, projects... etc, he won't tell you. TRUST ME, you'll think you did something CORRECTLY and you end up getting a crappy grade. he is very unclear about everything.. 2 THUMBS DOWN! "

"For my first time at at this school I felt like I was in a nightmare with all the work we had to do!!! Very unclear and makes YOU figure out how to get a good grade on anything by doing horrible the first few times. If you like tough, you'll like him...I didn't! "

"Do NOT take Dr A's class! He's a horrible professor! Hard to understand, rude, disrespectful and is very strict on attendance. His assignments are not clear and if you ask him to clarify something, be prepared!! Worst professor I've had at."

The only question you have to ask yourself is "Do I need this class to be able to become what I really want to become?". The answer to this question should answer your question nicely.

I guess the answer would be no because i'm an IT/IS major and my stupid school program requires all Business Admin majors to this this course. Whether you're a finance, infosys or an accounting major, you gotta take this stupid management class.

So, when you're going to solicitate (wrong word, I know >: ( ), you wouldn't fall behind because you didn't have this class? Good, leave the class, then. But, then again, losers quit, winners go on. Do you want to be a loser?

I had a prof from hell - twice. My junior year I had the same professor for two different courses, back to back on the same days. I walked in the first day, and he stands up in front of the class saying, "I am not a teacher, I am a researcher. They force me to teach class to do my research. I will not teach you, you must learn on your own." I checked the schedule, and the only way for me to graduate on time was to take these two classes.

After the midterms, which most of both classes failed and I think I made a C and a D, somebody spray-painted all over the building "<prof name> is an a**hole". He never made reference to it, but for the final, he handed out sheets of paper saying the final would be a subset of these questions. So I memorized them as much as I could (they were theoretical, proof-style courses) and ended up with Bs in both courses.

Good luck.

Learn to anticipate what the prof wants, then cram and prepare for each class as if it were a pop quiz. The challenge isn't the material - it's overcoming your own inhibitions toward not wanting to stick your neck out when your name is called. I can't remember ever being "shot down" by a prof when delivering an incorrect but cogent and compelling argument. Learn to adapt and predict what questions will be asked on certain topics, then pair with a partner and practice creating impromptu answers for these questions for at least 20 mins before every class.

Don't feel bad - My strategic management professor was also a well published, retired executive, with an intense class schedule. He was one of the least popular professors on campus, but the class turned out to be one of the best learning experiences I've ever had. Good luck!:D

Sounds to me like you're a Business Administration major with a focus in IT/IS. Yes, you need to take Strategic Management because your major is Business, not Computer Science.

My english professor's name is Mpofu. No, that's not his last name. That's his ENTIRE name. I'm not quite looking forward to the first day of class.

Be sure to learn English, not Swahili.

You run away from challenges now and you'll be running away from challenges forever. Stop being a 6 year old school girl and take that class. Life's tough, learn how to deal with it.

I have had a number of bad professors. They were bad because of ability and or attitude. When I was in school, I considered myself to be the customer who was paying a lot of money for a service. I never felt obligated to take poorly taught courses and or deal with a$$hole professors.

OP, if you can avoid this professor, do so.

I'll be going into my 3rd year of Engineering in September so I've seen my fair share of TERRIBLE Professors. Ones that don't speak English, ones that talk to the board and ONLY the board etc etc...

Sure, I'm paying tons to go through University and I don't see why people EXPECT to get good Professors. You need them more than they need you. As I said before, man up and take sh!t as it comes. It's life. It's not always nice and pretty and fair. You are going to come across people who are as$h0les so might as well learn how to deal with them. I'd rather make a mistake in dealing with them now and fail a course rather than make a mistake dealing with them later on when I have such a person as my boss and get fired and not get another job.

Cliffs: Live and learn.

If you had a choice of avoiding a bad professor, you wouldn't? What does avoiding a bad professor have to do with manhood?

Would go to a barbershop or a mechanic even though you know you are going to get bad service and ripped off because of your need to prove your manhood?

It's not a question about manhood as much as it is about learning how to deal with a different experience. Running from challenges will make you weaker.

As far as the barbershop or mechanic analogy goes, sure, go to a different one. By the same token, go to a different school, only to find that you'll find bad Professors regardless of where you are. Although the analogy is good, I don't think it applies here.

stick it out. it sounds like a big challenge.

i had a male prof who would relate everything back to sex. he would go off on tangents and then ask the girls in the class sexual questions. it was very embarassing, and a bunch of us complained about him. nothing was done.
this guy you are speaking of isn't worse than that.

I think the reason we take classes, is to learn something. We pay someone else to teach us.

If you don't think you are learning, and the point of the class is to just to do busy work and get a grade, then it is my opinion the class is a waste of time. And if this class is taking so much of your time and effort, just because the teacher is arrogant and not good with dealing with students, then not only is that class a waste of time, but it is hurting your attention and grades with other classes.
