I relived that horror when I was setting up the disk controller for my file server not too long ago so I can get a no raid mode option as I use software raid. Required to boot off a floppy which was DOS and the tool was DOS based but I kept getting some weird memory related error. Then I remembered about emm386 and how it has to be initialized in autoexec.bat. Did lot of googling but managed to get it to work. What a pain LOL.
