Yeah, I went to Atlantic Fish Co. and they were out of 2 of their top-prized specials, the Swordfish Chop, and the Alaskan King Salmon. :(

Been to a restaurant featuring "Chinese" food and they were out of white rice. China-fail if you ask me.

Never anything quite like that...that's their main staple, but otherwise, sure...I've had to choose something else many times.

It's not that uncommon for a restaurant to run out of things from time to time.

Despite the comical nature of the occurance, it does happen. One night I was working at pizza hut and we ran out of large pizzas. Some kind of snowstorm or something, everyone was ordering in. Boy did I catch flak from customers that night! Even though we were giving free upgrades to XL pizzas, people still complained like crazy.

I got an Orange Juice with breakfast at mcdonalds once. They didn't tell me that they where out of orange juice. So they just filled what must have been a quarter-inch of the cup with orange juice and mixed the rest with water. When I took a drink I almost spit it all over my dashboard. Bastards.

One time a lady came in and ordered a medium pizza. We had run out of medium boxes (go figure), so I was putting them in large boxes and writing "ran out of medium boxes, sorry for the larger" box or somesuch on top so people wouldn't think they were getting a tiny pizza. She comes back 15 minutes later and shoves it on the counter at me and demands her money back. I explained the situation but she just started screaming at me in front of a bunch of customers. People were giving her really weird looks...she looked perfectly normal but just went off on me because the box was 2" larger than her pizza. Oye.

A while back our kfc ran out of chicken breasts, more recently hardee's ran out of large coffee cups, applebee's ran out of lettuce-so no salads, little caesars ran out of crazy bread, mcdonalds ran out of lemons(for iced tea), and jack's ran out of fried apple pies.

I can see her point. Putting a medium pizza in a large box is completely unacceptable. You deserved her lashing.

I got a 5-minute verbal beating for that. Finally I gave her the money back. As soon as she left everyone was cracking up lol. Couldn't handle a non-standard pizza box I guess...

LOL, it makes it better that there were other customers sitting there to witness it and laugh with you. :p

Last week a local truck stop ran out of chicken fried steak. I order chicken fried steak about once a decade so as to not die too soon so I was very disappointed.

My fiancé and I stopped at a Wendy's drive-thru once at almost 2 a.m. because he wanted something to snack on, and the woman told us that they were out of buns, fries, lettuce, onions, bacon, and baked potatoes, and the only thing that they could sell us was a salad (with dressing that my fiancé was allergic to, and croutons, which he is also allergic to).

...we left.

Arby's being out of roast beef is pretty wtf, though. Lol.

Went out to a fancy restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner. They were out of the traditional thanksgiving dinner which they said they were going to have. I think we ordered pasta, salmon, and other stuff. Very disappointing.

Oh, and I was at a pizza place and they were out of medium and large crusts. We had to all get individual pizzas.

The best was this 40-ish dad with his 4-year-old daughter. Ordered a large on the phone for $12.99, came in and saw the Big New Yorker XL pizza (thinner crust) on special that day for $9.99, and proceeded to yell at me for charging him $3.00 more and demanded the sale price of the XL pizza (which we had offered him on the phone). First off, it wasn't the same type of pizza (different crusts, the Big NY is like 1/2 the thickness) and second it was simply a special that day which I had no control over. He proceeded to cuss me out in front of his 4-year-old daughter. Over $3. Of a different style pizza. Didn't budge on that one :) Don't know why people don't understand that I just worked there, I didn't make the rules or put the prices into our computer systems lol. I make your pizza, you pay me the money, real simple people.

Another time, a dude came in and cursed me out for not having "industry standard" 16-inch large pans instead of Pizza Hut 14" large pans. I stared at our rack of 400 metal pans then back at him and said I'd work on it.

I hate retail

I worked at a pizza shop for years. Every once in a while, we'd run out of pizza dough. Never had a customer really complain though. It's pretty easy to explain to them: "Unlike our competitors, we make all of our dough fresh each day. We generally plan for about 20% more than we typically sell for that particular day. Unfortunately, we were more than 20% busier than normal for a Friday night. The process of making fresh dough takes about 5 hours; by the time we figured out that we'd run out, it was too late. The alternative would be to have frozen doughs or add a lot of stuff to our dough so it'd be ready more quickly, but we would never sacrifice quality for convenience. Our apologies for running out. Everything else on our menu is still available."

Proper response is to politely point out that she is wrong & point the direction to the door. You already lost the customer; and will lose the customer regardless of giving back her money, and she is still going to badmouth you to her friends and how "I showed you!" By not backing down when you were clearly in the right, you would have gained repeat customers from the people who witnessed how you handled an idiot. People often feel bad for clerks who have to put up with abusive customers.

Alternatively, you could have gone for comedy. "Hey Joe, how many inches across are the medium boxes supposed to be?" 30 seconds with some scissors & masking tape & you could have altered the size of her box & given it back to her. When she continued to demand her money back, "Sheesh, there's no pleasing some people!"

was she somehow trying to argue that because you were forced to use large boxes that you had to give her a large pizza?
