I'm 21 year old male. As most, or maybe some of you know, I'm engaged to the most beautiful girl in the worl (see sig!). We've been each others only partner since September of 2001, when we met.

Before 9/2001, I had two partners before her when I was in high school and she had six when she was in school @ Univ. of Kentucky. But for the past ~3.5-4 years its been just us. I've always wanted to give blood because I think it's something everyone should do, but I always get this weird feeling about giving blood, like I have AIDS or something because I had unprotected sex in high school.

I think society has planted seeds in our heads going through school in the late '80s through the '90s that if you have unprotected sex you're going to die. Now I'm scared to give blood because I think they are going to tell me I'm going to die from AIDS. Anyone else get like that?

Well, I would suggest still giving blood because they do a full blood scan before they give it to people. This used to be a problem, before the checked blood back in the 60's(?). I dont remember exactly when but you used to get aids from getting transfusions because they never checked for such things. Now they do, and if you have Herpa-Gona-siphl-AIDS then your blood will be destroyed and you will get a letter in the mail telling you to go to a doctor.

You can get AIDS from SIX?

Please don't give blood just so that you can get your blood tested.

You need to get tested to get married, so why not just go get tested now and get it off your mind?

I've been tested for a bunch of stuff a bunch of times, waiting for the results is a pain, but once they give you the all clear you can sleep happy.

I've never had any symptoms of any STD and neither has my babe, and I actually have never even had as much as a cold in the past 4 years, but it's just this little man in the back of my head that sits on my shoulder when someone asks me to give blood. I respectfully decline and make something up about disliking needles or getting lightheaded, but its really because I keep thinking that AIDS takes 10 years to show up so I still might have it, even if I'm perfectly healthy right now.

You're going to need to get tested before you have a baby IIRC - what's worse - finding out right before you want to have kids, or now to get it off your mind?

Kinda weird that it keeps him from giving blood, but not from possibly infecting his fiancee.

I think in addition, since he mentioned the fact that she had six, he's inferring that she quite possibly might have given him something. Otherwise he wouldn't have mentioned it.

Well not only is he getting tested, he is also giving some blood (if it turns out clean). And hopefully he will continue to give blood if he is indeed clean. I used to give blood every 2 months, until I went to Europe and ate meat which. I guess I have Mad Cow cause they dont want me anymore.

But yeah, DONT DO THAT.

Ouch.

Yes, that is harsh, but true. But wait a second... she has had her blood tested many times in the past 4 years. She picked up a little weight when she went on the pill and her doctor tested her blood and thyroid for irregularities from depression / weight gain. They actually did that like 6 months ago. Would they have seen something then?

She assured me she was tested before we had sex. She told me she knew she was clean and if I gave her something she would kill me before she died, lol. I told her I had unprotected sex with two 16 year olds when I was in high school and never had any symptoms so we have been moving right along since 2001.

From cdc.gov (the first place you should have looked, dammit :p )

How long after a possible exposure should I wait to get tested for HIV?

The tests commonly used to detect HIV infection are actually looking for antibodies produced by an individual?s immune system when they are exposed to HIV. Most people will develop detectable antibodies within two to eight weeks (the average is 25 days). Ninety seven percent will develop antibodies in the first three months following the time of their infection. In very rare cases, it can take up to six months to develop antibodies to HIV.

For information on where to find an HIV testing site, visit the National HIV Testing Resources Web site at
http://www.hivtest.org

So basically, if you've already given blood in the last few years and haven't indulged in any junkie hookers, you're probably fine.

not really....

and only because even though he didn't respect me enough to not cheat on me...I think he'd at least have enough respect for me to not have unprotected sex with me if he's slept with someone else without protection.

I really hope he'd have at least THAT much respect for me...

I've never given blood. Never had a blood test. Or symptom. Or checkup. I've never been sick so I've never been to the doctor to check on anything and I haven't been to the blood drives because of the monster in the back of my mind.

If you had it, chances are overwhleming that you would know it by now.

Incubation period has now been revised to approx 9.8 years, but that is being refuted. The original time frame was 5 yrs or so. Any time you have a blood test, or give blood, it is automatically tested. Or it is supposed to be. I am not sure why you dont want to be tested. It is scary, I know, but it is also smart.

If she has been tested for other stuff, they would have let her know if she had anything. I would not worry about it at all. Get tested, and get it over with.

P.S. I wish I could give blood. I lived in England from 1989-1996 so they wont let me donate even though I have had many blood tests and check ups and am really healthy.

:)

This is the post I was looking for =) I would have had sex with one of the girls approx 5 years ago, and the one before that 7 years ago. My fiancee has had blood work more than once and she got herself checked out multiple times when she was @ UK... so I'm sure she has got herself checked out since she has been with me, she just has never said anything.

Thanks Karen.

In that case, quit being a wuss and go do one or the other. If you're worried, you should find out now so that:

a) You don't infect anyone else (assuming your finacee is clean)

b) You can live the remainder of your life accordingly. If you are negative; great.....go forth and prosper. If you're positive, you have a lot to think about and deal with. Money for treatment, money to provide for your fiancee/wife once you're gone, loose ends to tie up, etc. Better get on that now than later.
